Hún hné niður á tónleikum utan við Napólí á Ítalíu í gærkvöldi og var flutt á sjúkrahús þar sem hún lést af völdum hjartaáfalls í nótt. Makeba var á sínum tíma tákn fyrir baráttuna gegn aðskilnaðarstefnu stjórnvalda í Suður-Afríku og bjó lengi í útlegð en snéri aftur heim á tíunda áratug síðustu aldar eftir að Nelson Mandela var sleppt úr fangelsi.
