Travel, trouble, music, art, A kiss, a frock, a rhyme - I never said they feed my heart, But still they pass my time." -Dorothy Parker. Monday, March 29, 2010. The Great Seder Adventure. The preparation began with a Saturday morning grocery trip. It took the cabbie and I two trips to get everything out of the trunk into the entry hall. Saturday was not without incident, however. A bit of spilled gravy in the oven led to a smoky apartment and a loud smoke alarm. However, this time we opened the wi...Hat t...

Travel, trouble, music, art, A kiss, a frock, a rhyme - I never said they feed my heart, But still they pass my time." -Dorothy Parker. Wednesday, April 28, 2010. For some reason, I totally expect that someone at the GSB will make "Dumb Dumb Bullets" t-shirts next year. How much can the NYT mock powerpoint. Links to this post. Monday, April 19, 2010. Cultural institution throw down. Reading a fascinating article on animals and Africa. I came across the following New Yorker cartoon:. Links to this post.

It's always interesting to see how the weirdest pieces of American pop culture infiltrate the world beyond our shores. Links to this post. Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Field work in Mathere. Travel, trouble, music, art, A kiss, a frock, a rhyme - I never said they feed my heart, But still they pass my time." -Dorothy Parker. Sunday, December 12, 2010. Vaguely remembering Hindu Epics (Bangalore 2). After lunch, we decided to go to the ISHKON temple, the modern edifice built by the International Krishna Consciousness Society, or the Hare Krishnas. Having lived 4 doors down from their Boston outpost, I was interested to see the mothership (culturally insensitive much? View my complete profile.

Journey of a Repat: Bombay Bucketlist
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2011/06/bombay-bucketlist.html
Journey of a Repat. Wednesday, June 8, 2011. My philosophy on the sights of a city: Live like a resident, Leave like a tourist. For example, I lived in Paris for 3 months, but went to Eiffel tour only in the last week. Thus far, after almost 2 years in Bombay, I've done nothing that I'm "supposed" to do here. Well, I am also not 100% sure what I'm supposed to have done. Inspired by another friend. I'm starting a Bombay Bucketlist- things I need to see/do before I leave Bombay. 1) Haji Ali Mosque.
Journey of a Repat: January 2011
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Journey of a Repat. Thursday, January 20, 2011. White Christmas in India. This (now past) year, I got to experience a truly white Christmas in India (to be fair, I fled India during the season in 2009). Clearly, I'm not talking about the snow. December/Jan is wedding season in India! Actually, though I'm not talking about the resplendent brides in white dresses/saris (see example below). 1) Aforementioned wedding season. 2) Weather in most of India is ideal in Dec/Jan. 3) Vacation time in US/Europe.
Journey of a Repat: The Killer Serial Phenomenon
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2010/04/killer-serial-phenomenon.html
Journey of a Repat. Tuesday, April 27, 2010. The Killer Serial Phenomenon. If you ever have the good fortune of observing prime-time, original programming in India, you'll likely recognize the following breakdown:. Some 50% of original programming in India is "serials." Now, calling a serial, a mere soap opera would not be fair. Granted, serials do have the traditional signs of a soap opera:. Incredulous plot lines with unclear character motivations. Because a Mother-in-law was once a daughter-in-law):.
Journey of a Repat: 4 Types of Passengers on a Transcontinental Flight from India
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2011/06/4-types-of-passengers-on.html
Journey of a Repat. Monday, June 6, 2011. 4 Types of Passengers on a Transcontinental Flight from India. As my repat/expat journey is coming to a long hiatus (at least 2 years) in about 2 months, wanted to revive the blog for some final, hopefully amusing observations. Below is obviously a gross generalization but it effectively summarizes every flight I've taken from India to Europe/US. T-shirt, poor hair hygiene, lonely planet guide. Finland, Croatia, Romania- to plan the next 'adventure'.
Journey of a Repat: November 2010
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Journey of a Repat. Tuesday, November 30, 2010. The Indian Head Bob. Ok, I've decided to come out of blogging retirement to address a dire, rapidly growing problem. I have recently had a few friends visit who have picked up that I've become 'very' Indian - speaking in Belhi English and using Indian inflection/intonation. Most importantly, they claimed I have picked up the Indian bob (the head movement, not the hair cut). The Indian bob has been getting a lot of air time lately, Conan's Amex commercial.
Journey of a Repat: Bombay Street Meat: Mohammed Ali Road
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2010/09/bombay-street-meat-mohammed-ali-road.html
Journey of a Repat. Sunday, September 5, 2010. Bombay Street Meat: Mohammed Ali Road. I'm about reach actualization as a repat: now that I've already started drinking local- albeit UV filtered- water and last weekend, I decided to try street food in Mumbai. Mohammed Ali Road (heart of old, Muslim Bombay). Saturday night during Ramadan (or more beautifully rendered, Ramzan, in Urdu). The fasts of Ramzan days lead to the glorious feasts of the eve. M. Ali Road- 'the street that never sleeps'. Subscribe to:...
Journey of a Repat: February 2011
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Journey of a Repat. Thursday, February 3, 2011. Generally, my posts follow the format of an experience followed by some hilarious or not-so-hilarious observations. Today, I'm going a different route. First of a new series, I'm going to use the blog to to introduce new concepts. Today's concept is the "Culinary Canary.". Three points of context:. As some of you may know, I like to style myself a foodie. On the subject of food in India, we all know the less pleasant concept of Delhi Belly. I have finally j...
Journey of a Repat: September 2010
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Journey of a Repat. Friday, September 17, 2010. When I originally heard this idea at a Bombay comedy show ( article by a friend on CNN here. I thought it was an exaggeration. 1) Traffic cop with 'lati' (a baton) - no vehicle, no weapon. Cop must apprehend rule-breaking driver. He's going to run over there and threaten with a baton? Apparently, somehow the anarchy is aiding and abetting the police. Keep-up the "good work" guys! Posted by Sri Batchu. Tuesday, September 14, 2010. Why are there so many rules?
Journey of a Repat: August 2010
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Journey of a Repat. Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Re-re-patting and the power of a signature. At this point, I'm already confused as whether I'm a repat, expat, repat turned expat pretending to be a pat or whatever. To add, more confusion to the mix, I've started my application process to be an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India). Which some claim is essentially "dual citizenship" to India (it's more like an expensive lifetime multi-entry visa for people of Indian origin). 1 US Bank Account Application = 1.
Journey of a Repat: Monsoon, monsoon go away
http://repat-journey.blogspot.com/2010/06/monsoon-monsoon-go-away.html
Journey of a Repat. Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Monsoon, monsoon go away. Has arrived. How do I know that it's the monsoon versus just normal rain? That's like asking me, how do I know it's the BP oil spill and not Bobby Jindal's hummer leaking petrol. I think everyone knows what rain looks like, this is what monsoon in Bombay looks like:. The monsoon inspires a Seussian*. Exasperation in me (and yes, it's only day of the 3-month monsoon) a la Green Eggs and Ham. I could not, would not, in my house.

Peaceful
Mr Weasley dropped to his knees beside George. For the first time since Harry had known him, Fred seemed to be lost for words. He gaped over the back of the sofa at his twin’s wound as if he could not believe what he was seeing. Perhaps roused by the sound of Fred and their father’s arrival, George stirred. George’s fingers groped for the side of his head. 8216;Saint-like,’ he murmured. 8216;What’s wrong with him? 8217; croaked Fred, looking terrified. ‘Is his mind affected? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Eldest Child
Thursday, September 22, 2011. Being the eldest child is a gift. But that's another story. As my parents' aged my role as a caretaker continued. In 2006 on a plane sandwich between my mom and dad, I spotted another lady between her parents. She too lovely held her mom's and dad's hand during the long flight from Honolulu to LAX. I would hear her say things like, do you need more water? Do you need to use the restroom? And so on. Upon landing in LAX, I asked her if she was the eldest child?
