On the Downslope : FirstNovel.com

http://firstnovel.com/on-the-downslope

A man, a plan, a book … or maybe two. October 26, 2014 by Admin. As of two days ago, I’m more than halfway to my 50,000-word goal. I still have to make some key decisions about the plot (and about potential subplots), but the story is really taking shape, and I can foresee its completion. Exciting times! Tell me what you're thinking. And oh, if you want a pic to show with your comment, go get a gravatar. Back Under the Knife. Absence Makes the Story Go Faster. Theme by Brian Gardner. Middot; Log in.

Planning the Wrapup : FirstNovel.com

A man, a plan, a book … or maybe two. December 2, 2014 by Admin. I’m not “almost done” my book draft, but I am about 3/4 of the way there. That means I should start reining in the storyline, keeping new subplots from branching out. (How’s that for a mixed metaphor? It also means I need to make some final-ish decisions about how the book will end, as mentioned in an earlier post. I’m asking myself both. Which development would fit more coherently into the existing plot? This is the month I’ll finish!

Blocking, then Rushing : FirstNovel.com

A man, a plan, a book … or maybe two. Blocking, then Rushing. September 20, 2014 by Admin. Nope, this post isn’t about football, despite the title. I gradually drifted out of the 500-words-per-day habit that I mentioned in my most recent post. Part of the blockage was caused by other demands on my time, but some delays were internal. I’d reached a significant turning point in the story, and I was struggling with decisions about what would happen next. I hope you have great writing days like this too!

An Important Stat! : FirstNovel.com

http://firstnovel.com/an-important-stat

A man, a plan, a book … or maybe two. October 9, 2014 by Admin. Yesterday was one of those rare days when I didn’t write. I did lightly edit a few portions of my book-to-date, but I was occupied with too many other duties/responsibilities/distractions. An obvious idea occurred to me yesterday: why not use software to check my manuscript’s reading level? Simple – but it was definitely a good surprise. Tell me what you're thinking. And oh, if you want a pic to show with your comment, go get a gravatar.

A man, a plan, a book … or maybe two. Back Under the Knife. January 13, 2015 by Admin. Middot; Leave a Comment. A week or so after my draft was done, I finished a start-to-end revision – no huge changes, but lots of fiddling and smoothing. Then I asked two family members to read the new version and give me feedback. December 13, 2014 by Admin. Middot; Leave a Comment. As of last night, my first draft is finished! It clocked in right around 45,000 words. Woohoo! Now comes a substantial editing/revising/pr...

Word by word | Writing a first novel very slowly

About the novel behind the blog. October 22, 2007 · 10:07 pm. I’m still having a little break from the novel – but busy working on other projects. Or at least I was – until my concentration (always a bit flighty at the best of times) plunged off the bottom of the scale. I’ll be honest – I know exactly what’s causing it. He’s tall, muscular, bloody gorgeous and a VERY bad idea. (It’s great! It’s a bit like trying to. If I can master those, or so my theory goes, I can train myself to use similar cues to wo...

Time to Write | Ups and downs while writing my first novel

Ups and downs while writing my first novel. May 16, 2015. I wanted to join a critique group, so I joined a critique group in March. We meet every other week. It’s a good sized group with seven regular attenders in the general fiction group, and six of us in the sci-fi group. I thought, this is it, if I can prove my writing out here i’ll be good to go. It is a difficult balance that I have not yet learned. What’s been your experience with critique groups? Pen Down – The Story is Done! February 21, 2015.
