Central Park as Formative Assessment | Five Twelve Thirteen
https://fivetwelvethirteen.wordpress.com/2014/10/06/central-park-as-formative-assessment
Teaching, math, teaching math. Central Park as Formative Assessment. First, a huge thanks goes to Desmos for creating awesome lessons. I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve had students using a lesson from teacher.desmos.com, and it was awesome. If you haven’t checked it out, go right now. Seriously, walk through a lesson. I realized after the first class that this was a key moment in the lesson. I pulled this group together later in the class to do some thinking about the expressions, but at that ...

Teaching, math, teaching math. Monthly Archives: May 2015. 8220;Going Over” Problems. That they got questions right. My go-to moves come in three general styles:. Pick a high-leverage question or two and either question our way through it as a class, or analyze one or two examples of student work. Give students answers to the problems, have them check the ones they got to, then move on. I don’t love any of these. Moving on is totally fine. Giving answers ahead of time. May 27, 2015. Pyramid of Abstraction | Five Twelve Thirteen
https://fivetwelvethirteen.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/pyramid-of-abstraction
Teaching, math, teaching math. I’ve been throwing around the term “pyramid of abstraction” recently, and there was some great pushback on Twitter this evening. This post is my attempt to clarify what I mean, and why I think it is a useful perspective to building students’ knowledge. I’m defining abstraction very specifically. A student abstracts a concept, or builds abstract knowledge, if they can apply that knowledge in multiple contexts. Some examples:. Considering the pyramid of abstraction — th...
Warm-ups — Match My Desmos | Five Twelve Thirteen
https://fivetwelvethirteen.wordpress.com/2015/05/23/warm-ups-match-my-desmos
Teaching, math, teaching math. Warm-ups — Match My Desmos. My school has Chromebook carts that I’ve been using more and more recently. It’s great to have some more tools to provide my students, but also a bit of a pain to get everyone logged on and troubleshoot different issues. Luckily, I came upon a great warm-up to engage kids in purposeful practice while we get everyone logged on. This already exists in the form of Daily Desmos. Students’ job is to match the graph in Desmos. Questions I still have:.
Andrew Stadel on Mistakes | Five Twelve Thirteen
https://fivetwelvethirteen.wordpress.com/2015/07/24/andrew-stadel-on-mistakes
Teaching, math, teaching math. Andrew Stadel on Mistakes. I went to Andrew Stadel’s afternoon session at TMC yesterday: Math Mistakes and Error Analysis: Diamonds in the Rough. I got out of it a fun technique to get students thinking, and some new perspective on building deep knowledge. Andrew talked a great deal about the value of mistakes, and using those mistakes as opportunities for students to learn. His first proposal was simple, and looked like this:. As well as what it is. July 24, 2015. July 24,...

Sunday, November 27, 2016. Practice Structure - Slap It! The next practice structure that I'd like to share is Slap It! Here are the rules for Slap Jack provided by Bicycle Cards. Object of the Game: The goal is to win all the cards, by being first to slap each jack as it is played to the center. The Play: Beginning on the dealer’s left, each player lifts one card at a time from their pile and places it face up in the center of the table. When the card played to the center is a jack, the fun begins!

Thursday, June 30, 2016. Earthquakes Part 2 - Circles. I borrowed this lesson from John Stevens. As a quick side note, this is what I love about the MTBoS community on Twitter. You build a network of creative educators from literally all over the world and your own lessons improve because of the sharing that happens. Now, my students and I live in central Pennsylvania. We have the occasional earthquakes, but they are they type that only the most observant people even notice. Here is a link. This part tak...

Sunday, April 10, 2016. Barbie Zipline – Applying Angle of Elevation. I modified this activity from one done by Matt Vaudrey. I believe that they used the activity to study Pythagorean Theorem and the distance formula. Here is a write-up. Of John’s lesson. I used it to have students practice solving simple trigonometric triangles involving angle of elevation. I started the lesson with the same video. After they did this, I gave them two starting heights for the final zipline that they would perform in fr...

Monday, December 26, 2016. Practice Structures: Tic Tac Toe. Tic Tac Toe is an easy way to have students work on building fluency and is more engaging than just completing a worksheet. You could try this activity with either of two different approaches. The activity was made to help students practice graphing linear inequalities. Is an activity that I created with this format. The activity was designed to have students practice finding the surface area and volume of spheres. Sunday, December 18, 2016.

Algebra 1 for the 21st Century. Sunday, September 13, 2015. Standards Based Grading continues to evolve. This is my third time through the Common Core Algebra 1 curriculum with Standards Based Grading and the online book. Based on ck-12 modules. Our school is moving towards proficiency based grading, so I've made some changes to line up with that. My course has used 30-ish standards. For the entire year and I've been using a version of quizzing based on Dan Meyers' blog post. View my complete profile.
NCTM14 -> New members? | DIY: Math PD
https://diymathpd.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/nctm14
Sometimes it's better to just do it ourselves. NCTM14 - New members? NCTM 2014 left me ON FIRE. (Almost literally, it was so hot walking around on Saturday.) But seriously, it left me hungry for more: more PrBL in my classroom, more student conversations, more teacher online collaboration, more ed conversations, more all of it. Give a “new teacher” discount” a la student discount (how do you define/prove “new teacher”)? Give a first-time attender discount? As well as a similar one for prospective teachers.

Teaching, math, teaching math. What If I’m Just Not Ready? I had two interesting moments in my professional learning this year. The first was this ignite talk. On mathematical structure that has helped me to learn an enormous amount about that practice standard, and have continued working on since then. The second interesting moment happened after PCMI. 75 minutes each day were dedicated to “Reflecting on Practice”, and the theme this summer was formative assessment. I had some concep...In both of these ...

Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Gidget just like Offred is willing to do whatever she needs to do to get what she wants. From playing the boys against each other to try and land the one she wants or begging her parents for the money to buy her surfboard. Of course this is not like Offred and using her body to stay alive and out of the colonies, but it has the same principals behind the idea. For some reason no matter how many times I try to insert a link it will not insert it! So once again here is the URL.
