What We Are Working On Now. Video and Photo Gallery. Why do paths need fixing? Who decides which paths need fixing? Our experienced Fix the Fells rangers from the National Trust and National Park undertake path surveys and monitor erosion activity on the paths using an agreed set of criteria. Between them they assess which paths need to be fixed and the order of priority. Our volunteers also help identify eroded paths and we take advice from other experts, such as Natural England. Who fixes the paths?

The number and priorities will change over time as some paths erode more quickly and new ones are identified. These 120 paths have been assessed and prioritised by our skilled rangers. On a day to day basis it is our rangers and volunteers doing the hard work in all weathers and they are all highly skilled and trained. Fix the Fells is as much an art as a craft as we aim to leave as little trace as possible of the work we do.

NT North Lakes Pathfairies. Wednesday, 20 July 2011. This is most recent section of path with the turf stripped and a small amount of landscaping done. The drainage ditch taking shape, The excess soil is then wheelbarrowed down to the far end to build up the path height and maintain the correct gradient. As I type, the heavens have opened, the sky is black and the few days of summer sunshine we have had recently already seem a distant memory. It has been exceptionally hot and humid, conditions which have provided their own set of challenges when doing a heavy job such as ours, so slightly cooler conditons will be welcomed by all team members. Recently we've been working at the far northern end of the Central and Eastern Lakes property, over at Wetheral Woods, a few miles outside of Carlisle. Wetheral Woods is a twenty-one acre broadleaved woodland and is home to St Constantine's Cells, a hermit's refuge that is thought to have been in existence during the Roman times.
