Vindication… and Obligation. Vindication… and Obligation. On May 25, 2012 1 comment. It’s over. Our long journey for a Canadian autism diagnosis has ended, and we are victorious. So why am I so tired? We went to our family diagnosis and funding meeting this week, girding ourselves for any outcome. I wasn’t hiding my nerves well, so the wonderful doctor let us off the hook immediately. Jack is on the spectrum, he has ASD. We knew that. Jack is special. Jack has always gotten exactly what he’s ne...I know ...

Facing Our Fears | Autism is a Trip

On Sep 15, 2014 2 comments. I’ve been away for a bit. I’ve been in a self-made cocoon of sorts, waiting for the right time to reveal my “new” self. Or the self I’ve always been, but didn’t really know it. I thought for a while that I needed to bring platitudes and great revelations. That I needed to be profound. And as I sat, cozy and safe in my self-imposed little box, it came to me. Rather, Jack came to me. Jack has been my teacher on so many levels, and I should have known this would be no different.

On Jun 16, 2010 1 comment. But on occasion I jump blindly into the abyss. An hour ago I had one of my soon-to-be-famous “Ooooooohhhh! Let’s do it! 8221; moments. One that will either make family memories to last a lifetime, or be a disaster of epic proportions. I guess there will be memories either way. I have mentioned before. I still have these worries. However, an opportunity has presented itself that seems just too wonderful to miss. Eventually our waiting paid off. Something smelled fishy in Disney-...

On May 11, 2014 0 comments. I don’t want a lot on Mother’s Day. I really don’t. I worked in restaurants for years (and my husband still does), so the last thing I’m interested in is taking all of my children out with the rest of humanity to battle for overpriced prime rib. We can do that anytime. What I want most on Mother’s Day is serenity. I also asked for my children to help clean up the living room and kitchen. You know, where all of their toys are strewn. Jack took issue as well, in typical Jack fas...

Canucks Autism Network Family Festival 2014. Canucks Autism Network Family Festival 2014. On May 8, 2014 0 comments. We always have a good time at the Canucks Autism Network. 8216;s (CAN) Family Festival in downtown Vancouver. We usually go later in the day, so we miss the actual walk (we don’t like to do big crowds, even for autism – because of autism). We still enjoy the booths and activities, though. Jack looks good as a Canuck! Jack and the Olympic Cauldron. Come join us next year! Stuff I talk about.

Extreme Air Park – Hostility, Greed, and Autism. Extreme Air Park – Hostility, Greed, and Autism. On Feb 25, 2014 4 comments. We in the autism community are, sadly, used to hearing about maligned special needs parents and children. It’s become an all-too-common topic in the news and blogs lately. While most of us know or are familiar with some affected persons, it’s rare (at least for me) to have a situation happen right in your own backyard. Or down the street, in my case. Recently, Kelly took her son.

The Goo and The Tooth Fairy. The Goo and The Tooth Fairy. On Jun 6, 2011 2 comments. We have recently weathered a great storm. A constant, unending barrage. An unpredictable maelstrom. We have survived Jack’s first loose tooth. Jack had all of those things, but he also had something else: nonstop sensory input. Somehow the idea that a loose tooth in his head would go relatively unnoticed escaped us. Silly, silly us. That right there is Jack’s first adult tooth, already poking through behind the bab...
