The north aisle was built outside the north wall of the nave. This original north wall had two arches inserted with a central pier. The length of this new aisle was 11.5m but only 1.4 m in width which was unusually narrow. Back to the top. Flawford Church lies in Nottinghamshire south of Nottingham and 1 miles east of the village of Ruddington at an ancient crossroads from which it is reached by Flawforth Lane. It is situated in an area of flat farmland which rises gently in the distance. From the northern boundary of the churchyard the ground slopes away to form a gentle escarpment. Only nine gravestones were left in the graveyard. Mr. A. Stapleton, the author of The Chronicles of Flawford', went to some trouble to trace the whereabouts of some of the missing stones and he produced the following information. A headstone was discovered covering a well close to Pasture Lane about a quarter of a mile south of the junction with Clifton Lane. The inscription was not fully discernible, but read as follows:. Why was it sited there? The obvious and much quoted answer is that it was built in a central position to serve the surrounding villages as the mother church. In that respect it stood at the crossroads of the Ruddington Plumtree road and the Keyworth Edwalton road. Another incentive is the geographical position on a slope above the majority of the surrounding villages. It has been said that Flawford was a 'lost' village but this is completely untrue. The remains of St Peter's Flawford Church stand just over a mile away from the village of Ruddington. It had been demolished in two phases in 1773 and later on in 1779. Following this there was nothing visible above the ground to suggest anything had been there. But was there anything there before the church?
