Chris's Flying Blog: Planning for an Emergency
http://flightlessons.blogspot.com/2006/10/planning-for-emergency.html
Lessons learned in aviation. Thursday, October 26, 2006. Planning for an Emergency. If you're like most pilots (I used to fit into this category as well) you get your pilot's license and you give up on practicing emergencies. Why bother? Think about it this way, for every hour you fly, spend 6 minutes and practice one emergency procedure. What do you do if you have partial engine failure on takeoff? Full engine failure on takeoff? What do you do if your aileron or elevator gets jammed? It's not just mech...
Chris's Flying Blog: Becoming a CFI
http://flightlessons.blogspot.com/2006/10/becoming-cfi.html
Lessons learned in aviation. Monday, October 16, 2006. Well I met with George to discuss becoming a CFI. He gave me some study recommendations and a list of "must have" books that I'm ordering from Marv Golden. As I type this (see the list below). It seems like the steps to becoming a CFI are great steps even for those who never plan on teaching. The amount of material you'll learn and the level of understanding you'll achieve (hopefully) will most definitly make YOUR flying better.
Chris's Flying Blog: Nantucket

Lessons learned in aviation. Wednesday, August 23, 2006. After work, I preflighted Dean's Warrior, filled it up and got everything ready for our passengers. We took went with a coworker Tony and his wife Kim. Everyone arrived 45 mins later and got in the plane. The weather was perfect CAVOK. Tony showed us the Maria Mitchell House. We had dinner at The Atlantic Cafe. We landed back at MMK, tied up the plane and all decided that there's nothing cooler in the world than flying. "Who would have though t...
Chris's Flying Blog: ConUS Challenge
http://flightlessons.blogspot.com/2006/08/conus-challenge.html
Lessons learned in aviation. Tuesday, August 22, 2006. The ConUS Challenge (Continental US Challenge). I think this is a great idea. It gets pilots flying to airports that they may not normally go to. We all have our favorite airports and it's easy to just keep flying to the same places. I'm anxious to see how this challenge turns out. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Simple template. Template images by gaffera.
Chris's Flying Blog: Montauk Lunch
http://flightlessons.blogspot.com/2006/10/we-flew-to-montauk-kmtp-for-lunch.html
Lessons learned in aviation. Tuesday, October 03, 2006. We flew to Montauk (KMTP) for lunch yesterday. Weather was beautiful. Great visibility and fairly stable air with just some minor light chop from time to time. We made it there in just about 30 minutes which is not bad considering it's a 4 hour drive. Bob Vila Would Not Approve: Congress Has Never Used Shark
http://bobvilawouldnotapprove.blogspot.com/2011/03/congress-has-never-used-shark.html
Bob Vila Would Not Approve. Adventures in home "improvement". Monday, March 14, 2011. Congress Has Never Used Shark. Shark is a performance profiling tool that I use heavily at work. In a nutshell: Shark tells you what part of your program takes the most time to run, so that when you spend time making your program faster, you make the parts that matter. Put another way: it pays to go after the whale, not the minnows. Consistently going after whales is what has made X-Plane fast over the years. Social Sec...

Melt 1 cup of butter with 1 cup brown sugar, boil 3 minutes, pour on top. Bake for five minutes at 400, then sprinkle on semi-sweet chocolate chips. Let them melt, spread them, let it cool (if you can) and nom. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Why My Wife Is Brilliant (part 372). The Hacks of Life.

Bob Vila Would Not Approve. Adventures in home "improvement". Monday, August 09, 2010. If You Can't Stand Up, You've Probably Been Fouled. I've been reading the official rules of Ultimate. I realized I didn't really understand the criteria for fouls. And now that I've read them, it's clear that a lot of casual and semi-serious players don't understand them either. Here's a big distinction that gets lost in recreational play: a general. Foul vs. a receiving. Foul To put it simply:. The continuation rule a...

Bob Vila Would Not Approve. Adventures in home "improvement". Tuesday, January 25, 2011. Keeping with the "notepad of food and drink" theme, I figure I'll take note of the Scotch I finish.a bottle lasts a long time (despite X-Plane 9), so better to write it down. People write some crazy stuff about Scotch - it's like wine tasting. "The nose had notes of hickory, burlap, and an old bicycle. Very good." I haven't taken a tasting class, so consider what follows to be totally uninformed. Salt Fish Fried Rice.

Bob Vila Would Not Approve: No Haam Yu For You!
http://bobvilawouldnotapprove.blogspot.com/2012/12/no-haam-yu-for-you.html
Bob Vila Would Not Approve. Adventures in home "improvement". Sunday, December 30, 2012. No Haam Yu For You! A follow-up on salt-fish fried rice. While I continue to not be able to find Haam Yu anywhere even remotely near me, I found an alternative that gets closer to what I could get in the DC area:. Salted Mackerel for the fish. Note that this isn't like Haam Yu - since it is a fresh fish (e.g. it has not been fermented) it doesn't pack the punch. Anchovies, the kind you get in a tin. The Hacks of Life.

Bob Vila Would Not Approve: Mmm....Cheese
http://bobvilawouldnotapprove.blogspot.com/2011/06/mmmcheese.html
Bob Vila Would Not Approve. Adventures in home "improvement". Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Is back in session - real vegetables - what an improvement over the grocery. So we're making a lot of Kale soup. Trader Joe's spicy Jalapeno chicken sausages make a nice substitute for Chorizo. My recipe is something like:. Sauté an onion, some carrot, celery, and maybe garlic on low heat. Throw in the chopped up sausage, brown it a little. Throw in the Kale, mix it around a bit. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Bob Vila Would Not Approve. Adventures in home "improvement". Saturday, April 17, 2010. Rational Actors: What We Knew. I have blogged in the past on our decision to rent our house. Out (rather than sell it) and just a little bit on the ideological food fight. Over human decision making going into the crisis. Before the crash, did lenders and home buyers act rationally (according to perverse incentives) or did they simply lose their minds? Why did we buy the house? What were we thinking? We knew the house...
