What do you do when the overnight race you were supposed to go on was canceled due to a gale warning? You go sailing anyway! The trip took a few hours and by the time we made it to the mouth we were seeing about 30-35 knots of sustained wind and were down to a reefed main in building seas. Sometimes you just need to sail a race where major tactical decisions are made hours in advance, rather than boatlengths. My first attempt to do some distance racing in Auckland ended in a high winds cancellation and a wild ride. Among others.
