Doing the Doula Thing | broader borders

November 5, 2012. Doing the Doula Thing. Where do I even start? I guess there’s no place like the beginning. We used Priceline for the first time and it was totally weird. We were given a workbook that was referenced throughout the weekend and contains a lot of helpful information and forms/lists that will benefit me in the future (anyone who knows me knows I love a good list! We dove right into the topic I was most interested in: your doula business! Ready for Day 3. One woman made vegan chili! It was s...

Fallin’ for Food! | broader borders

October 12, 2012. Fallin’ for Food! Fall food is the best food – am I right, folks? I’ll confess: I went through a week where I was calorie counting and my food was BLAH and I wasn’t inspired by any of it. Now that I’ve snapped out of that bad idea, I’ve got some food to show you! Vegan scallopine with balsamic roasted brussels sprouts. Open-faced red lentil sloppy joes with a side of collard greens. Pizza rolls with caramelized onions and spinach on top: before the roll. And after the rolling. Stay tune...

Home Tour, Pt. I | broader borders

June 21, 2012. Home Tour, Pt. I. It was attached to King Grocery, which has now been updated to a yoga studio run by my landlady. Let’s start with the living room, shall we? Here is what the front door looks like, from the inside. It’s original to the butcher shop! Standing at the front door and looking to the right. A better look at my DIY’d artwork that I am so very proud of. (All of the supplies are from the dollar store! Standing at the sofa. The front door is to the left of the TV unit. As seen, here.

We Did It | broader borders

November 2, 2012. We didn’t get around to carving pumpkins until the night before, seeing as we were away all weekend. At my birth doula workshop (don’t worry, that recap post is coming soon.). We got BIG ones; they were the same price ($3.99) no matter how many pounds. We set up our cutting area on the floor with a special about witches playing in the background. It took me awhile to get the top off but I did it! There’s our guts and the nicely separated seeds, ready for roasting! Dave and I have lived ...

This is Halloween | broader borders

October 24, 2012. The kitchen table. It’s festive and edible! I’ve got this hanging on the back of our front door. Dave’s mom made it! My skull bunting that I bought from Target last year. I just love those little faces. A few items on top of the bookshelf. The black cat’s are wine bottles and the ghost is something my mom passed down to me. Another little corner. Here are some of my pieces from a Nightmare Before Christmas desk set that my mom gave to me and one of my white vases from my last post!

It’s Finally Here! | broader borders
https://broaderborders.wordpress.com/2012/10/26/its-finally-here
October 26, 2012. It’s Finally Here! Today (and for the weekend) I will be spending my time at my birth doula workshop, a day that I have anticipated for months! The World Health Organization recommends the optimal rate for the best outcomes occur with cesarean section rates of 5% to 10%. Rates above 15% seem to do more harm than good (Althabe and Belizan 2006). The national U.S. cesarean section rate was 4.5% in 1965 (Taffel et al. 1987). The 2010 rate is at 32.8% (Hamilton et al. 2011). The word “...

Get Outta Here! | broader borders
https://broaderborders.wordpress.com/2012/10/19/get-outta-ere
October 19, 2012. Well, well, well…what do we have here? You don’t say! This one, I had been working on just a little bit at a time and I finally wrapped it up last week. Then all I had to do was hang it, take photos, write this post, format everything, lose the post to an Internet explosion, re-write and re-format everything…. So, you know when you move into a new place and it takes you some time to settle in and, therefore, time to hang up art? How do you turn that into art? After we hung the mirror up...

A Little to the Left | broader borders
https://broaderborders.wordpress.com/2012/11/12/a-little-to-the-left
November 12, 2012. A Little to the Left. We have some exciting things happening around here. The first being that I have my first doula client! I am not going to get into any details about it, other than to say that. You can all keep your fingers crossed for me that it ends up being a qualifying birth (on average, you need 8 births to get the 3 that qualify for certification.) Also, Dave is starting his clinicals tomorrow, which is a pretty big step in his school plan. Also! 8221; said no one. I did each...
