The Great Wall of Lutz. The best Christmas present ever…………. December 22, 2015. I grew up a total daddy’s girl. After two boys,my mother was overjoyed to have a girl. She tried dressing my in frou-frou clothes. But I wanted to be with my dad. In his garden,in the summer. And,in the winter,in his greenhouse. And when Michael, the Elder, was born, guess who held my hand? Michael’s dad was in the Navy and was away,on a ship.It was the Vietnam era, after all. Readers of this blog know my Dad loved his orchids.

Bees to the Rescue. Of Giant Moths, Nanking Cherries and Sea Side Plums →. March 11, 2012. Spent the day propagating plants. Back in fall, I tried my hand at ground layering, a technique that involves burying part of a plant stem to encourage the plant to root in place. Specifically, I bent a long blackcurrant. Today, I unburied the layered section, and was delighted to find roots! Line art drawing of ground layering (above) donated to the Wikimedia Foundation. And released into the public domain. I also...

The nettles I planted for pesto, the alum root because I’m intrigued by its astringent properties, and the Oregon grape and salal I hope to one day add to the most recent native food forest plot. In other news, the bare root walnut I planted early in the spring has finally awakened, and, having learned the hard way that deer will eat young walnut leaves. I am try...
