Transport for London have commissioned a report on Traffic Light accidents by the TRL (Transport Research Laboratory). Key facts from the report:. In 2008 there were 5519 casualties at signal controlled junctions in the London area alone. From previous studies, over 1/4 of all accidents (including pedestrians and cyclists) were “principle right turn” accidents (involved a vehicle turning right). 1/5th right turn accidents involved fatality or serious injury. Our objective is to reduce the risks to all road users of accidents and their associated consequences of injury or death. Much of the current unacceptably high casualty rate at junctions is caused by road users being forced, due to a lack of relevant information, to 'best guess' a dynamic situation and simply getting it wrong.
