As well as making rocks fluoresce, UV lamps are used for lots of other things, such as killing germs, examining passports, locating cracks and faults in metals and more. Actually, this page should be titled About Me! Wirrealpa Mine – long since abandoned. The Mobile Fluorescence Museum. Most people have never encountered fluorescence, and generally don’t even know what it is. People are so amazed when they see my collection that I decided to transfer it into a trailer so I could take the display around and let people enjoy, wonder at, and learn about fluorescent minerals. Therefore, given that our whole hobby is based on UV light, we have to take all necessary precautions against its harmful effects. We need to protect ourselves, and we need to protect others. Brief unprotected exposure – less than a minute – is probably not a problem. But be sure never to look directly into a UV light without eye protection.
