Monday, February 16, 2009. A particular mobile home park in Scotts Valley, CA has a small pond that often has great birds in the winter. I saw a rare Tufted Duck here in 2004 and also my first Redhead, a female. In recent years, Hooded Mergansers are seen here as well as Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads, and sometimes Common Mergansers. Next is the male Common Merganser. I see these more frequently along the San Lorenzo river and was surprised to find a pair in Scotts Valley. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Thursday, July 15, 2010. I've really been enjoying taking pictures of wildlife, and been thinking of upgrading to a DSLR. Wendy from the Santa Cruz Bird Club was kind enough to loan me her old Rebel DSLR with a Tamron 75-300 lens so I could experiment with a DSLR. Very quickly, I was able to see some of the advantages of even an entry-level DSLR with an inexpensive lens. Thank you Wendy for letting me try one out hands-on. By the way, the food scrap that the sparrow is feeding on was not placed there...

Saturday, January 30, 2010. A belated year review. The big thing was of course my trip to Ecuador. I went to the top of the Andes. And to the Amazon rainforest. And saw hundreds of birds. And some mammals, too. As blogged earlier, I developed an interest in butterflies and odonates this year, and also, spurred by a decent camera, got more involved with photography. I took a week off around October 1st, visited Pt. Reyes. And my Dear Old Mama. I hope to blog more and get more good pictures in 2010.

Monday, September 21, 2009. First up is a Vivid Dancer damselfly that I noticed resting on some hedges near Moran Lake. When perching, damselflies typically hold their wings close together above their thin abdomen. Dragonflies spread their wings out away from the body. I noticed this male Blue-eyed Darner land on a tree at Natural Bridges State Park. The Variegated Meadowhawk seems to be the most common dragonfly around Santa Cruz this fall. Ok, that's all for now, there will be more to come later on.

Saturday, January 31, 2009. San Lorenzo Park duck pond. One area that can get some fairly interesting birds, especially in winter, is the duck pond at Santa Cruz's San Lorenzo Park. Families often feed the waterfowl and gulls here and the avifauna can become quite acclimated to people and provide reasonable photo opportunities. Friday, August 7, 2015. July Wrap-Up and August TBR. Sorry for the delayed wrap up! It’s been a crazy month. What have I been up to? In the beginning of the month, I was on vacation. I had a great time, and got to read many amazing books. So, during that time I didn’t post almost at all. July just felt crazy. I didn’t post as much this month because there were a lot of weekends when I was away and some day trips. Since the school year is starting up soon, I think this will really help to simplify things.
