Fishing with the General: WAR ON BIG FISH!
http://fishing-with-the-general.blogspot.com/2015/05/enter-general.html
Fishing with the General. Wednesday, 27 May 2015. WAR ON BIG FISH! Welcome, soldiers. I am the General and this is my blog. You might have read some other fishing blogs, but this one is going to be different. This one is going to be HUGE. It’s going to be louder than war and even more fun, if similarly unethical. So listen up, and listen good. This is my first tip in fact: you want big fish? I simply knew these worms would be just right for a world record roach. Forget those puny two and three pounde...

CROOKED LINES: February 2015
http://dgfishtales.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, 22 February 2015. Rewards after the Rain. Winter fishing can be a hit and miss affair in the changeable late season. But I'm glad to report that in spite of some fairly damp, difficult sessions, the fish at least came out to bite for my recent guided guests, Michael and Raphael Pryor. It was to be an eventful little day in the end. Raph spotted a kingfisher, while none of us could miss the clumsy raft being paddled by a bride and hen party, that had a dodgy looking male appendage sticking out...

CROOKED LINES: October 2014
http://dgfishtales.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 29 October 2014. Pike are still my favourite fish on the planet. I think this is for several reasons. One is the fact that even twenty-two years since my first, they still have that ability to jam my heart into my mouth and feed me that irresistible cocktail of excitement and adrenaline. Compared to my roach pole, it looked like shark tackle. Actually, this makes me think just how much better tackle is today. Those things I regarded as the height of sophistication in about 1990 (springy li...

CROOKED LINES: April 2015
http://dgfishtales.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, 26 April 2015. Coarse surprises for spring. For the sake of my curiosity as much as anything else, I'm always scanning the water and dipping a net into the edge to see what I might be able to copy. Midges are a given, but there are also stacks of water boatmen, shrimp and -not to be confused- hog lice like this chap:. You can read all about an interesting session on Colliford Lake on the new Turrall Flies blog. And share the post. Labels: fly fishing for carp. Fly fishing for coarse fish. A littl...

CROOKED LINES: January 2015
http://dgfishtales.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 21 January 2015. Singles Success and "Fly For Coarse" Winners. A few bits of current news to round up in this edition of "Crooked Lines", including the results of the www.flyforcoarse.com. The above was a very welcome second on a bitterly cold day of biting wind and murky water. A nice result and not a treble hook in sight. Can the single hook really hold its own you ask? Seriously though, almost every fish I've had on the singles has been neatly hooked in the scissors and been a piece of cake...

CROOKED LINES: December 2014
http://dgfishtales.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, 20 December 2014. Black clouds and perch. With so much "homework" involved in getting the latest book finished, it recently dawned on me that I hadn't been perch fishing for ages. Another sustained effort at catching some good ones on the fly had been in the back of my mind for months- and with a rare day off I decided to ignore the horrible weather and make a Wednesday trip. I used jig flies. The initial problem was the sheer greediness of the local jacks. A couple had grabbed the fly befo...
