1856-1858 Flying Eagle Cents. 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. The 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. Was the first coin of the series struck for circulation. The prior 1856-dated issue had been produced as a pattern to show the concept of a small cent to members of Congress and other influential individuals. The prior one cent coins had been heavier and larger, but contained a great deal more copper. There had been worries that the public would feel that their coinage was being debased. 1856 Flying Eagle Cent.

1856-1858 Flying Eagle Cents. The first small cent was struck in a composition of 88% copper and 12% nickel. Uncirculated pieces weigh 4.67 grams, or approximately 72 grains. They have a diameter of 19 mm (modeled after the British penny) and all have a plain edge. As all were coined at the Philadelphia Mint, none display mintmarks. 88% copper, 12% nickel. James B. Although the format and design had been well received by the public, the coins had proven difficult to strike and a new design was developed. The 1858 Flying Eagle Cent had a total mintage of 24,600,000, which is the highest of the series. From this number, three major varieties are identified.
