When the Federal Government annouced in 1995 that the airport would close on June 1, 1996, both the municipalities of Wiarton and Keppel showed interest in a joint ownership agreement. A public meeting was held on February 11, 1996 regarding the future of the airport. On this day, a volunteer group, FOTA (Friends of the Airport) was formed, with the mandate to help out however they could around airport, doing small jobs, etc. Ownership was officially transferred to Wiarton and Keppel on May 17, 1996.

Was easy to spot, near the town, and adjacent to Johnsons Lake, which serves as a sea plane base. The single runway 04/22 is in good condition, and is 4493 feet long. There is an aviation maintenance engineer located on the field. We stayed at the Companion Hotel. One block east of the hotel is the Hearst Heritage Sawmill;.
