The Grist Mill

Daniel Kennedy's grist mill on Slippery Rock Creek was built in 1852. This original mill was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1868. In 1875, Thomas McConnell bought the mill and replaced the waterwheel with water turbines. This was one of the first mills in the country to be retrofitted with rolling mills (a major upgrade from grinding stones) and was considered high-tech at the time. Staffing of the mill is dependent on volunteer availability - please call prior to visiting (724) 368-8811.

McConnells Mill State Park. McConnell's Mill State Park is located approximately 40 miles north of Pittsburgh on I-79, near the intersection of PA 19 and US 422. Exit-79 at US 422. Follow 422 West (toward New Castle) approximately 2 miles. Turn left onto McConnell's Mill Rd. Parking is approximately 1.5 miles on your right. Limited parking for persons with disabilities is available by the Gristmill and covered bridge. For a list of campgrounds near the park, please visit our links page.
