Who is this Alan Turing guy? | figuring out computer science

https://focs.wordpress.com/2007/10/02/who-is-this-alan-turing-guy

Figuring out computer science. What and why and more about computer science. Who is this Alan Turing guy? An half-eaten apple and a dead body in the bed. A scene from Snow White and how Alan Turing died over fifty years ago. The coroner concluded suicide. By cyanide. Today the Alan Turing award is the highest academic prize in the computing world – the Nobel prize of computer science. The scourge of his last days was his conviction as a homosexual. And helped to break the german Enigma code. He was a...

Don’t learn Rails! | figuring out computer science

https://focs.wordpress.com/2007/10/17/dont-learn-rails

Figuring out computer science. What and why and more about computer science. Don’t learn Rails! You’re currently a computer science student and you think web engineering is a nice career choice? Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, Digg. Isn’t a web startup. A good idea to get rich quickly? In the year 2000 the mentality was similiar. This excerpt is from Dot-com fever stirs sense of déjà vu. A more famous example than Right Media would be Skype. EBay acknowledged this month that it had overpaid for Skype.

Hello world! | figuring out computer science

https://focs.wordpress.com/2007/05/13/hello-world

Figuring out computer science. What and why and more about computer science. I’m starting this blog to document my journey into the vast fields of computer science. My current idea is to send a nice email to some people i don’t know and ask them about computer science. The email will look like this:. Richard Hamming in his talk “ You and your research. 8221; asked three good questions: What are the most important problems in your field? What are you working on? Why aren’t they the same? The big one: &#82...

Figuring out computer science. What and why and more about computer science. We’re sorry to inform you. Nce upon a time there was a little-known patent clerk in Bern who received a disappointing annual performance review in ’05. Did you guess who is meant? If you did, you should read the full article. It features five of the most important papers of computer science and why they should be rejected from publishing. On October 20, 2007 at 3:41 pm Leave a Comment. To TrackBack this entry is:. /random/thoughts: Books

http://nicolas-lara.blogspot.com/2009/11/books.html

Sunday, 8 November 2009. The algorithm design manual. Honorable mentions go to:. A series of interviews with great programmers in which they expose their thoughts on programming along with their personal experience. As of today I've only read a few chapters, but I go so far as to recommend the whole book as it has left a very good impression. Introduction to the theory of computation. Later this month I'll make a list of non-technical books I have read or am reading and I'd like to recommend. I am partic...

/random/thoughts: Blogging

http://nicolas-lara.blogspot.com/2008/12/blogging.html

Tuesday, 16 December 2008. I finally decided to start a blog! It had actually been decided for quite a while, but I hadn't had time to start writing. That, and I was waiting to build my own (perfect) blog website. Anyway, I gave up and decided give blogger a try at least for the time being. Well, there are many reasons. In the first place there is an awful lot of (smart) people telling you ". You should write blogs. I could also do a vlog (video log) using something like seesmic. English is a nice langua...

/random/thoughts: Emacs mark-stack

http://nicolas-lara.blogspot.com/2009/11/emacs-mark-stack.html

Saturday, 7 November 2009. There's no worst feeling than being lost in your code. You know, when you need to look at a bunch of code fragments buried in other files or in the same, very large, file; or having to trace back a bunch of function calls spanning multiple emacs buffers and not knowing where the previous stuff was. Okey, there are probably a lot of feelings that are worst. But you gotta give me it's annoying. If you don't know emacs-lisp there's a guide. I can't recommend enough. So I want two ...

/random/thoughts: My .emacs

http://nicolas-lara.blogspot.com/2009/02/my-emacs.html

Sunday, 22 February 2009. I have been delaying this post for quite a while. I've been waiting until my .emacs file is "complete". Today, I realised it is never going to be complete. So here's a few notes regarding my emacs configuration and how you can use it. I decided to put some order (beauty? Being a little more realistic, I decided just to put my .emacs in a git repo that I could access everywhere and which included all the things I normally use when developing (or writting in general). This...With ...

/random/thoughts: Spiral matrix

http://nicolas-lara.blogspot.com/2009/04/spiral-matrix.html

Monday, 20 April 2009. Today I found a very interesting set of 'simple' problems. It is a list of Berkeley University's "hardcore tech-interview style riddles and mathematical puzzles". I was specially interested in the Computer Science section (as you might have guessed) and, in particular, one problem caught my attention (probably because of the large matrix). The problem reads as follows:. 99 98 97 96 95 94 93 92 91 90. 64 63 62 61 60 59 58 57 56 89. 65 36 35 34 33 32 31 30 55 88. That will open your ...

Tuesday, 3 November 2009. November is said to be the (Inter)National Blog Posting Month. The idea is simple: 30 days - 30 posts. People that read this blog regularly would know that it hasn't been very active lately (More than 6 months without posting). That's just wrong. Let's change it. That's it for now. Till tomorrow. Wednesday, 4 November 2009. My Pycon talk (Python Metaprogramming). If you followed the link on my previous post and looked at #64 you might have noticed I'll be giving a talk on Python Metaprogramming. Here's a sneak peak at what the talk will be like along with some comments. A short explanation of what metaprogramming is, why it is needed and how it can save you time and effort. Cool uses/examples of metaprogramming in other languages:. Tools for metaprogramming in Python:. Short example in Python.

http://nicolas-lara.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 February 2009. Publishing an emacs buffer. Yes, another emacs post, in row, but I found this so amazingly cool that I couldn't just keep quiet. I told myself today: "It would be cool if I could convert what is rendered in an emacs buffer to html so I can show it to others". Of course, some people had already beaten me to it. I used an emacs add-on by Hrvoje Niksic. It does all the hard work, and it does it very well. Converts buffer to html and writes it to file". Sunday, 22 February 2009.

Five O'clock Shadow - FOCS Online

1/1/11 12:00 - Christopher Davis:. This is my comment on the current comic! I 've had a really hectic week. I was gone on two separate trips, broke down, got turned down for a really awesome gig, and lost my drawing pencil. So, I threw this together based on some random thoughts, using MS-Paint and an old comic. enjoy? Called Senet. I 'm still looking for work, but am feeling a bit more hopeful with the jobs I 've posted to lately. And of course I 've been working on my wedding with Beth.

Figuring out computer science. What and why and more about computer science. I’m too busy to pursue this blog further, but i just got one more reply to my big question. Sorry to be so long replying. It was largely because I wasn’t sure what to say. But one answer just occurred to me: inventing the concepts people make programs out of. Aka language design. If you don’t know him, the language design he talks about is Arc. And i know him, because of his great essays. We’re sorry to inform you. A year ago, Y...
