Archaeologist's Culinary Field Guide to NY State

Since field archaeologists spend so much time traveling, we yearn for some good cooking, a warm bowl of hope at the end of the day (and sometimes in the middle).

Archaeologist's Culinary Field Guide to NY State: August 2009

http://foodfieldguide.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 7, 2009. Union Hall Inn (Johnstown, NY). Old Building, Good Food. Yes, I admit we snickered at the date posted on the building as we entered. It was built in 1798, but has the bold roof-line styling of the Italianate, which would date to mid-19th century. That makes us jerks, and nerds, at the same time. Looking at the building from a distance, though, and it's definitely solidly Federal style, and at a grand scale, too. These people look excited to respresent the rich history of Johnstown.

Archaeologist's Culinary Field Guide to NY State: The Silo Restaurant and Country Store (Queensbury, NY)

http://foodfieldguide.blogspot.com/2009/10/silo-restaurant-and-country-store.html

Sunday, October 18, 2009. The Silo Restaurant and Country Store (Queensbury, NY). The Silo Restaurant and Country Store. The hungry archaeologist rarely turns her nose up at a free hotel breakfast no matter what the menu. But sometimes the same stale starch gets a little humdrum. Fortunately, for guests of the Quality Inn in Queensbury, The Silo restaurant and country store is steps away. Hooray for adaptive reuse! Posted by Heidi S. October 20, 2009 at 7:32 PM. What a lovely bunch! Nice review, Heidi!

Archaeologist's Culinary Field Guide to NY State: January 2009

http://foodfieldguide.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 29, 2009. Lincklaen House (Cazenovia, NY). Take your muddy boots off at the door. In addition to the hotel proper an attached business block containing two store fronts was built on the east side of the property. Originally the bar was located in the southwest corner of the main floor where the lobby sitting area is now located. Two businesses occupied the spaces in the basement. Over the years various structural changes took place. By the late 19. Posted by Brian R. Grills. This might ...

Archaeologist's Culinary Field Guide to NY State: June 2009

http://foodfieldguide.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Cohen's Bakery Internet Cafe (Monticello, NY). There are still internet cafes? The Monticello Miracle Part 3. Back when the interwebs were just getting spun, there were these places where folks went to drink lattes, eat biscotti, and surf the burgeoning mega-thu-way of information. This bourgeois phenomenon and business plan has all but disappeared from the landscape. McDonald's, Jiffy Lube, taxis, porta-toilets, and even my great aunt's tea room offers wi-fi these days.

Archaeologist's Culinary Field Guide to NY State: The Bean (Index, NY)

http://foodfieldguide.blogspot.com/2008/12/bean-index-ny.html

Thursday, December 18, 2008. The Bean (Index, NY). Giving a good name to cafes in stripmalls everywhere. Lunch is really why I like the place. There are about 20 sandwiches, and all are worth eating. My personal favorite is the Jerk Chicken sandwich, a hand-flattened, jerk-seasoned chicken fillet on a soft roll with lettuce, tomato, onion and pineapple mayo, served with blue corn tortilla chips. The lunch omelet is a good choice as well, served with grilled French bread and a mixed green salad. There was...

Fire Ox Vs Metal Dragon: July 2007

http://fireoxvsmetaldragon.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Fire Ox Vs Metal Dragon. Saturday, July 07, 2007. Cloisters and Cat Beds. Just going through some old images, and wanted to mention - I love the Cloisters. That is, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's. Separate branch for the art and architecture of medieval Europe. I've happily made the transition from "downstate" to "upstate" (not a native of either), but I still do miss the Cloisters. Maybe a road trip this fall? And now, a short review of knitted cat beds. This one is from Stitch and Bitch.

Fire Ox Vs Metal Dragon: November 2006

http://fireoxvsmetaldragon.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Fire Ox Vs Metal Dragon. Sunday, November 19, 2006. OK, so I do actually finish some things. Like this hat made with Lopi, the sturdy Icelandic wool. It is not a masterpiece of technique (perhaps DC. Will post her latest hat, which is a masterpiece), but it was my 2nd hat and I'm very happy with it. Since this hat, I've gone on and made 2 hats for children. The first one was a sort-of gnome hat for AZK's lovely little girl. There's a pattern in Morehouse Farm Merino Knits. This week I finished 2 baby qui...

Bashir Basenji Boy: Babys and basenjis and aliens, oh my!

http://basenjiboy.blogspot.com/2008/10/babys-and-basenjis-and-aliens-oh-my.html

Thursday, October 30, 2008. Babys and basenjis and aliens, oh my! Well, there was another baby shower for people at work, this time for CH and LS. It's chronicled (at least a bit) at CH. S site, so I won't duplicate. Much. She missed the action shots of little boys with balloons, which I couldn't miss out on posting. Here's AG and AS with blue balloon. apparently AS needed to wrastle it a bit. CH got a little bit of practice in with little AZK. Hey! Why jump all the way to jumbo size? He's 13 years old (...

Bashir Basenji Boy: George Lucas Must Be Smoking Crack

http://basenjiboy.blogspot.com/2008/08/george-lucas-must-be-smoking-crack.html

Friday, August 15, 2008. George Lucas Must Be Smoking Crack. Some of you know I am not the biggest Star Wars fan. Episodes 4, 5 and 6 were good movies. I Who doesn't like Han Solo? This newest Star Wars movie - The Clone Wars, was painful. Absolutely painful. There has been a cartoon series based on The Clone Wars out, some time ago. The animation is pretty good, the story is pretty good. But this 2008 version? Mr Lucas, what is your problem? Or Andean pan flute? Or how about a Didgeridoo? There is nothi...

Fire Ox Vs Metal Dragon. Monday, May 28, 2007. Preserve us from the Demon of Weak Nerves! This is an early 20th century advertisement for Wolcott's Instant Pain Annihilator - just the greatest patent medicine ad I've seen so far in my diss. research. See the little demons, pounding and drilling into poor beardy's head? Posted by Claire at 6:12 AM. Saturday, May 19, 2007. Cleveland Eliminates New Jersey". And all in one night, too! Bashir Basenji Boy: Bye bye, Pussycat

http://basenjiboy.blogspot.com/2008/10/bye-bye-pussycat.html

Thursday, October 16, 2008. Bye bye, Pussycat. Well, my fat cat, Felice, finally passed away this weekend. It was a long struggle (about 3 months) of her kidneys failing. She was in no pain, so I guess going in one's sleep is as good as it can be. We miss her a lot. I will have to edit my title bar someday. Friday, October 17, 2008 9:05:00 AM. I'm so sorry to hear about Felice. She was a beautiful girl. Hugs to you. Friday, October 17, 2008 2:30:00 PM. Sending you a ( (big hug) ) from California.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008. Random Elmo Posting, for No Knit Sherlock! Way back in July, No Knit Sherlock! Made a special post in my honor. I don't know how I missed it. I really don't! I do apologize, and here is my blog response. No Knit Sherlock gave us the Elvis x Elmo hybrid called Elm-is. I give you "Tackle Me Elmo.". A major knitting project is currently underway, but it is a gift. SHHHHHH! So I will post it later, after it is gifted. SHHHHHH! I finally finished my hourglass sweater.

Fire Ox Vs Metal Dragon: March 2007

http://fireoxvsmetaldragon.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Fire Ox Vs Metal Dragon. Thursday, March 29, 2007. Up, down and out of town. Here's a little bit of knitting. It's Stacy Charles Tweedy Cotton Classic, knitted up to be a sweater for a small child. Why no needles? It's knit in one piece, bottom up, and I realized when I got to the armholes that I had 20 too few sts. 20? How could I be off by that many? And tomorrow, we're heading out of town, to Providence and Boston. Just for fun. Posted by Claire at 8:12 PM. Sunday, March 25, 2007. And, for anyone who ...
