On this, the near eve of our nation's independence, I would like to wish my readers* a happy new year. Hip hip! Let's all take a minute to toast to posting more in 2012 than in 2011. And really, despite the late start, it isn't a huge number to beat. There's gotta be like 2 of you left, right? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Ooh i need a badass title. View my complete profile. Exit 148: April 2007
http://mkdoyle.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 22, 2007. Fran has her hair back- silver and curly and thick. Her breast is gone, but perhaps the cancer is gone as well. She has her hair back, though, and with it, a bit more energy. Like Samson, her strength waned when her hair fell out. Up, again, anew. gen. To be born, to become. Anagenesis, according to the OED, means "a reproduction or regeneration of structure." Anagenesis. A good word to learn on the day of the vernal equinox. Spring arrived a few hours ago. My seedlings are in...

These Are Not the Goats You Are Looking For: Henleyville Race Report. Editor's note: I'm going to use a bunch of terms that none of you know. As such, there is a glossary at the bottom of the post. So I did my first road bicycle race today. 3 18-mile laps through flat, flat, flaaaat Central Valley California. But really I should start this story earlier, like last Friday (cue Fight Club-style cut-back to the real start of the story). After doing our pre-ride on Saturday, I rushed home, showered, packed s...

I deleted a post. I didn't want to, but I couldn't find a way to get rid of the spam comments on it. I will fix this once I work for Google (if I remember). and by fix, I mean file a bug so that somebody else fixes it, most likely. I'll see you all in California, and post more from there I promise. Tomorrow night, I leave for what will be the start of my 7th round trip to the East Coast this year. And yet, somehow, in the middle of all of this, I feel like I'm finally growing some roots in the damp clay soils of California. There are finally things that I will be sad to miss happening in the Bay Area this weekend. I can't, I have roller derby. So a week after getting married, I went over to Oakland, put on some roller skates. Interlude: holy cow, I just saw a blimp! Flat-track roller derby league.

Science teacher: October 2014
http://doyle-scienceteach.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Breaking out of the classroom into the world. Thursday, October 30, 2014. An old one, but Samhain is creeping up, and the ancients revered the cycles. I'm creeping towards ancient status. Despite whatever virus is playing tootsies with my hypothalamus (or maybe because of this), I found myself in thigh deep water on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean at dusk, trying to catch a striped bass. I spent the evening shivering under a blanket. As the sunlight recedes on Samhain, the dead walk among us. This past we...

Science teacher: Hiroshima, again
http://doyle-scienceteach.blogspot.com/2015/08/hiroshima-again.html
Breaking out of the classroom into the world. Thursday, August 6, 2015. Hiroshima was destroyed on August 5th, 7:16 PM, our time- just under an hour before our sunset. Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima, an important Japanese army base. . It is an atomic bomb. It is a harnessing of the basic power of the universe. . . . What has been done is the greatest achievement of organized science in history. Harry S. Truman. What is our responsibility as teachers of science? Bloom...

Science teacher: Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Breaking out of the classroom into the world. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Wash Rinse. Repeat. Amidst the chaos and the entropy, sunlight streams in and helps us put things back together. We're pretty good at this as populations, much better than as individuals, all of whom share the same fate. Life goes on, but we do not. The sparrows and the squirrels do their squirrel and sparrow business just as they did when I watched them so any decades ago, but they are not the same sparrows, not the same squirrels.

Breaking out of the classroom into the world. Saturday, May 30, 2015. May you find peas. For everything that lives is holy, life delights in life.". Handful of grace, picked this morning. About 10 weeks ago I poked a finger into the ground a few dozen times, dropped a pea (and an occasional stray buddy) into each hole, smoothed over the dirt, then let them be, hoping (but not truly believing) today's harvest would come. One thing won't change, though, should I still be teaching- kids will plant and see, ...

Science teacher: Teaching in June
http://doyle-scienceteach.blogspot.com/2015/06/teaching-in-june.html
Breaking out of the classroom into the world. Sunday, June 14, 2015. From a June half a decade ago. She wrote, simply, "hi mike.". I assumed I was the Michael she meant, but it does not matter, berries are for all of us, so I am using the photo. The hand belongs to Jessica Pierce. The berries to whichever mouth gets them first. Along my walk to school are several cherry trees- the cherries are ripe now. I get to school with a tongue stained purple. Now I fear dying in winter. I do not wish to die, fe...
