How Fit Do I need to be? You need to be a good walker with the ability to hike up and down steep hills. The hikes are moderate in difficulty. We usually take shorter 1/2 day hikes the first couple of days to acclimate our visitors to the climate, altitude and walking on sandstone. Then, weather permitting, we'll take a couple of longer all day hikes with stops for lunch and snacks. Up to Window Rock. Down from Window Rock. Memories from our Trips. When planning your trip to this area, you may want to take into account other events that are going on at this time such as the Navajo Nation Fair. Which is usually held September 3 - 7. Please check their website. After you enjoy the canyon, you have a chance to see many Native American tribes from both North and South America at the world renowned Gallup Indian Ceremonial. The Diné (Navajo People)

The Diné (Navajo People). Canyon de Chelly is located in the center of the Diné (Navajo) reservation. They are the largest Indian tribe in North America. Their homeland covers 25,000 square miles, which spans parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The canyon is the summer home for residents and their livestock. They move their sheep down to the canyon floor during the warmer months to graze on the canyon floor. Come winter, the families and the flocks are moved above. Check out the Book List.

This is a sample trip itinerary to give you an idea of the trip experience. Every trip is a little different as we alter the trip to the needs and interests of the group and to the weather. Hike down from White House Ruins overlook to base camp and set up tents and camp. 1/2 hike to Bad Canyon to see pictographs and ruins. Day hike up Yei trail across Mesa and down x trail. Visit family birth hogan on top and learn about many native plants. Group just heading down trail to White House ruins.

The land they live on has been passed down from generation to generation They believe the Holy People (Time of the beginning) instructed the Diné where to live. In the past she worked as a park ranger and for "Trees for Mother Earth." Lupita also worked as a substitute teacher and Navajo culture instructor in Tsaile, Arizona for many years.
