for now, i cook: September 2010

http://fornowicook.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

For now, i cook. In my enduring quest (months, on and off) for the ideal bread recipe - the one most suited to my tastes, lifestyle, and capabilities - I read this. Article in the New York Times a few weekends ago. Ruth makes Jim Laheys bread every day. Though Ive made his breads before (well, one, once. Her approval was an appealing invitation to get back to it, a decision I have been enjoying with apricot jam. And butter for the past two weeks.  . Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

for now, i cook: Soup made for summer

http://fornowicook.blogspot.com/2010/08/soup-made-for-summer.html

For now, i cook. Soup made for summer. I'm not sure what it was that tempted me so. I had never made or even tasted corn soup before. But there was something about it and I knew that I really wanted to do both. Often potatoes flounder in soup; tomatoes are dull. Even corn, frozen in the dead of winter, loses its crunch. But this August, it seems soup - kernely corn soup - is precisely what these veggies were harvested for. Corn Soup with Tomatoes, Potatoes, and Basil. 6 ears corn, shucked. Add broth, res...

for now, i cook: A treat from Argentina

http://fornowicook.blogspot.com/2010/01/treat-from-argentina.html

For now, i cook. A treat from Argentina. And I have something to share. I tried all afternoon to stop eating, but every time I walked by the bread and dulce jar (That was often. Very often. They were arranged on the counter in the teeny casita I was staying in) I had to take just one more slice - I couldn't help it! The bread was still warm and so soft - and about three more spoonfuls. My stomach ached until the next morning. 1 16-oz can of sweetened condensed milk. 4 egg yolks, lightly beaten. In a medi...

for now, i cook: October 2010

For now, i cook. The best cheese I ever made. Though I have long been a pro at eating cheese, since the start of my mongership, Ive been finessing the joys of actually tasting it, getting to know my cheese - all of its likes, dislikes, stories, and deep-dark secrets. For example: the gloriously gooey, fabulously orange Meadow Creek Grayson, a beefy, buttery masterpiece that smells enticingly like a boys high school locker room, is coincidentally crafted by the Feete (! It's maybe from there that my Murra...

for now, i cook: Flowing with milk and honey

http://fornowicook.blogspot.com/2010/08/milk-and-honey.html

For now, i cook. Flowing with milk and honey. Israel, I was always taught, was known as the land flowing with milk and honey. Nothing against Israel, but for me, the land where milk and honey run freely was Argentina. You see, ice cream is a thing. Down there. It was what I had for lunch on my first day, and what I looked forward to every weekend during my excursions into El Bolson. I've mentioned the weekend routine. Before, but left out the ritual of Jauja. Slapped together with a long spatula in tower...

Newer posts →. February 16, 2009 · 12:54 am. My leap back into the homebrewing circuit after a 6-month recess is with a style that, naturally, is also a couple months late off the block: the Christmas beer. Girl Awakes: The Sweetest Fruit

http://girlawakes.blogspot.com/2011/06/sweetest-fruit.html

Taking on life with eyes wide open. Hoping to learn a thing or two along the way. Wednesday, June 15, 2011. It's been months since I last wrote. For a while I felt a nagging twinge of guilt whenever I'd think about how long it'd been since I last wrote a blog post. But then I got over it. I'd write again when I felt like it! In the meantime, I was busy living (and loving) the life I wasn't writing about. Nothing wrong with that! The L-R-B (Leaf/Root Block). Our first pepper, just hangin' out. Loved your ...

Girl Awakes: October 2012

http://girlawakes.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Taking on life with eyes wide open. Hoping to learn a thing or two along the way. Wednesday, October 17, 2012. Is it October yet? This phrase became a running joke during the most brutal days of summer last year at the River Ranch. "Is it October yet? During the time when most of our time- nearly every day- was spent harvesting endless rows of tomatoes, the weeks stretched on interminably, and it seemed there was no end in sight. "Is it October yet? Was code for, I need a friggin' break. I thought taking...

Girl Awakes: The Weight of a Life

http://girlawakes.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-weight-of-life.html

Taking on life with eyes wide open. Hoping to learn a thing or two along the way. Thursday, November 22, 2012. The Weight of a Life. Chicha (left) and Boda (with the "B" on his forehead, in August. Inside, I called Jared, the farm manager at the Ranch, and told him about Chicha's behavior. He gave me the number of the vet they use, who visits our animals when they're sick and treats them, often free of charge. His wife had just had a baby, Jared warned me, so he may be difficult to get ahold of. At 1am, ...

Girl Awakes: Coming back

http://girlawakes.blogspot.com/2012/03/coming-back.html

Taking on life with eyes wide open. Hoping to learn a thing or two along the way. Monday, March 5, 2012. I've had itchy fingers for a while now. I've had lots of time to think, and I've found bits of narrative floating through my brain, just begging to be written down. A few weeks ago, I listened to the audiobook version of David Sedaris's When You are Engulfed in Flames,. Which he narrates in his delightfully dry, nasal voice. That week David Sedaris narrated my thoughts. It was awesome. Im trying to ta...

Taking on life with eyes wide open. Hoping to learn a thing or two along the way. Monday, March 28, 2011. Our "professors" giving a harvest training. Admittedly, I was pretty intimidated at first by this sixteen year-old girl wonder. I already felt green enough, having to confront my ineptitude with power tools, plant propagation, and plant and pest identification, and wondering frequently, "What have. I learned in the past twenty-eight years? Mira, my sixteen year-old hero*. These words- this language- ...

Taking on life with eyes wide open. Hoping to learn a thing or two along the way. Saturday, January 22, 2011. California, I'm coming home. This is where you will find me for the next eight months, beginning March 1. I'm packing up and moving to California. For Now and Later

Monday, October 17, 2011. Well, a funny thing happened in our house this week. We have a kitten.a 3 week old kitten. Nowthat may not seem so funny, but when you consider that 3/4 of our family is allergic, we already are too busy as it is, and the kitten was sorta pushed on us.well, it's funny. And not always "funny ha ha." But it is really cute and we are enjoying having it around. For now it is inside but hopefully will have no problem transitioning out when it gets big enough!
