For The Hill People

For The Hill People. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Monday, July 25, 2011. When visiting shopping centers in Thailand, it’s hard not to notice the plastic-like sheen and pastel colors that make everything seem a bit artificial, like it was all popped out of a mold that morning. Standing in the food court of the Thai equivalent of Walmart, it’s hard not to be slightly put off by that notion. We were heading to a village 100 km from camp, and we needed to pick up supplies. For us that meant sandals and snacks.

For The Hill People: Welcome to the Jungle

http://forthehillpeople.blogspot.com/2011/06/welcome-to-jungle.html

For The Hill People. Sunday, June 26, 2011. Welcome to the Jungle. We woke up the next morning at 4 o’clock to the sound of roosters crowing. We all silently agreed that was ridiculous and went back to sleep. Unfortunately, the roosters didn’t agree with us, and woke us up at regular 30 minute intervals up to 6 AM, when I decided I was going to start moving. Not too long after, around 7, breakfast was served. The cases were mostly malnutrition, which Dr. MN treat with IV shots of vitamins, and pills ...

For The Hill People: June 2011

http://forthehillpeople.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

For The Hill People. Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Day 3 began like any other day, with roosters crowing. However, we had already begun to adapt to their cockadoodling, and managed to sleep until 7 o’clock. We were told that we’d be hitting the jungle for more wood before breakfast, so we threw back on our muddy, soaking wet clothes from the day before, and went outside. Fun fact: Clothes don’t dry in the rainforest. The road continued through a valley, with tea growing on either side. We started to get furthe...

For The Hill People: April 2011

http://forthehillpeople.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

For The Hill People. Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Just Need a Little Help from my Friends. The trip we're about to go on could not have been put together without the combined support of a number of different groups and people. After all, it costs money to send 4 poor medical students halfway across the world and pay for medications, supplies, equipment and other goodies. On a side note, Dean Sackey does public health work in Ghana. Wednesday, April 6, 2011. And then what happened? Second, here are some of ...

The Sound of One Hand Clapping: Ending Sentences With Prepositions is Seriously Uncalled For

http://ineedanothercoffee.blogspot.com/2011/03/ending-sentences-with-prepositions-is.html

The Sound of One Hand Clapping. I need another coffee. Thursday, March 10, 2011. Ending Sentences With Prepositions is Seriously Uncalled For. Really, what's that about? It's a hard habit to get out of. Even worse: sometimes you meet someone who is finely attuned to this grammatical conversational error and- in case you couldn't guess- they are very difficult people to have a conversation with. And don't even get me started when it comes to sentences that begin with conjunctions. Stuff I already wrote.

If this is a first date, you're on strike #7 (note: not the "bowling" kind). I want to boo you. She's gorgeous. Stop talking so much about yourself. Ask her about her! What does she like doing? What is that "gut feeling" and should we really listen to it? I am so inspired by Jordan Rubin, author of the "Maker's Diet". Below is a fascinating excerpt from his book. The excerpt is only a snippet of all the crazy connections between the gut and the brain. I encourage anyone and everyone to buy the maker's diet.it's life changing! Most people would say the brain determines whether you are happy or sad, but they have their facts skewed. It seems the gut is more responsible than we ever imagined f...
