Amherst College: Go Fossil Free! We can emit less than 600 more gigatons of carbon dioxide to avoid warming the planet by more than 2 °. Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The threshold above which life on Earth would be exposed to grave risks of environmental catastrophe. Unfortunately, fossil fuel companies have fossil fuels reserves that would, if burned, emit nearly 3,000 gigatons worth of carbon dioxide. To put it another way, 80% of known fossil fuel resources need to stay in the ground.
