Opening up on foster care. I’ve been down and out for several days. My body slowly healing. But through it my heart has been dancing. A new side of our eleven-year-old foster son Big D has shown itse. The past week, Big D has been going to the nurse’s office daily complaining of headaches. Sometimes once, sometimes twice. Like any parent, I try to find the right balance of . I lay there with my arm across his back. Cuddled up next to my dear foster son as he tries to hide his body in the wall. I’ve...

Opening up on foster care. August 11, 2015. A year ago St Louis, and most of the nation, was up in arms because of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager. And rightfully so. This NY Magazine article. 8220;White Kids Get Medicated When They Misbehave, Black Kids Get Suspended – or Arrested”. Principals conference in the first week of school. He fou...

Getting the call. | Fostering Real
http://fosteringreal.com/blog/2015/08/14/getting-the-call
Opening up on foster care. August 14, 2015. Our first call came at 3am. A two and a four year old were being pulled from a meth lab and needed a home within the next hour. Could we take them? All of a sudden we were more than awake. But still not thinking clearly. What questions were we supposed to ask again? Our license is for 3-13 year olds, 2 kidsare we even allowed to care for a two year old? But “yes” isn’t that simple. How big is the two year old? Do we need to buy a crib and a different car seat?

Opening up on foster care. August 5, 2015. Nick was five years old with fifty foot walls when he came to our house. He had little need for my husband or me and frequently asked us to leave him alone. Always with a “please.”. So we waited and invited. Offering hands and hugs, but accepting nos. They weren’t our walls to take down. He did it his way. Some sections fast, others slow. I will never forget that first time he snuggled in. And the many times he fought for my lap after. But he was connecting.

Thursday, June 7, 2012. Here Goes. (be back in a minute - I swear! I started this blog because I stumbled across Honesty2Betsy while researching an upcoming (potential) hysterectomy. I'll be using it as a place to sound off, and work out my thoughts through my fingertips and keyboard, as I amble along, trying to sort out how I feel and think about things, and slowly become sane. I'll probably be talking a bit about orgasm, women, and post menopausal women's orgasms. When I get around to blogging. And, a ...

Friday, April 3, 2015. Fear, Part 4: Choice Is Magic. One of the lessons that has taken me longest to learn in working with fearful dogs is that pushing forward moves things backwards. Seems like a nonsensical statement but when it comes to any animal experiencing generalized fear within an environment, the very best thing to do is to wait and let the animal choose to come to you. Again, I am not saying to do nothing. But what you will be doing is being calm, quiet, and watching carefully for ways yo...
