FRADU's pilots and engineers were all ex-military with varying fast jet backgrounds from the English Electric Lightning to former Red Arrows team members, which were then employed by Serco as civilians. FRADU's Hawks were often operated from bases in Mainland Europe as well as the UK, including previous deployments to France, Spain, and Portugal, as well as RAF Kinloss and RAF Waddington in the UK. The Hawker-Siddeley (later British Aerospace) Hawk served with the Fleet Requirements and Air Direction Unit (FRADU) at both RNAS Yeovilton and RNAS Culdrose for close to twenty years until its withdrawal in June 2013. A type commonly associated with the Royal Air Force and its aerobatics team; the Red Arrows, its role and use within the Royal Navy, where it has provided sterling service without the loss of a single aeroplane, is often overlooked.
