The sky is alive, that’s the first thought that came to my mind at 5am this morning as I settled myself into the pilothouse navigation chair. I didn’t have long to admire it, Frances had woken me up with the news that the Wabasto heater was not working and she needed assistance changing out the fuel nozzle. Normally it’s just the two of us but occasionally our land friends come to visit, some even braving the northern latitudes. After spending the winter in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, our focus this year is West Greenland and Baffin Island. For the occasion, I decided to make an apple cake, using the recipe I developed a few years ago while wintering in Tromso, Norway. I even had to wake Frances up just to verify that she did not sneak the 3 eggs in while I wasn’t looking. Apple Coconut Raisin Cake. When a passage is going well there is no doubt but if it turns rough with no end it sight and little progress is being made in the right direction it becomes hard to avoid the question: is it worth it? Every task no matter how simple from making a cup of tea to walking a few feet without being thrown across the cabin became a big effort if not impossible. Sleep was fitful at best. Is it worth it?
