Sunday, October 30, 2011. My first trip to the Great American Beer Festival was back in 2002 as a representative of Martha's Exchange Restaurant and Brewing Company. Tuesday, October 11, 2011. So why has it taken me a decade to make an attempt such a procedure? I've never encountered in beer what I was smelling a...

Five Gallon Carboy: March 2011

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 29, 2011. SR6/JDP5/ZG1: Beer is bottled, beer is fermenting, beer is enrolled. JDP5 in the front, ZEE German in the back. I need to update more before the title becomes all project acronyms. The double IPA I made for the Sam Adams. This weekend, JDP5 goes in the whiskey barrel. For three or four weeks and should be ready to drink by May. The same day I brewed JDP5, I brewed up the inaugural batch of ZEE German. I made it for the DC Homebrewers. A passel of sprouting Cascade hops. Unfortuna...

Five Gallon Carboy: The JD Project

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2010/06/jd-project.html

Friday, June 11, 2010. I had an idea. A couple weeks ago, I came across Copper Fox Distillery's Website. In addition to making and selling Wasmund's whiskey, the Sperryville, Va., distillery produces whiskey barrels. For enthusists who want to age their own bourbon at home. I wasn't all that interested in aging my own bourbon, but the bourbon barrel gave me an idea. To know JD was to know the man loved Early Times. To let them know their sales would be down from then on out. I'm calling it the JD Project.

Five Gallon Carboy: February 2011

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 13, 2011. JDP4: And away we go. The bourbon is out and the beer is in. After two weeks in the fermentor, I decided the rye Scotch ale was close enough to what I was looking for to move ahead to the barrel phase of the JD Project. I had wanted to get this project done last month so I could submit it into The Bruery's homebrew competition. One of the homebrew clubs in Maryland, C.R.A.B.S. Holds an all-grain class at Maryland Homebrew. So who needs a Manhattan. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Five Gallon Carboy: May 2011

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Labels: Everything is better in threes. Look at those labels. Last year, when I began working on the JD Project. I had the idea to develop a label for the beer. I knew that I was going to eventually tell my mother and JD's kids about the project, and having a label on the beer would connect with them more than all the little things I did with the JDP recipe. And then the Sam Adams competition. Why not take the opportunity to show off my daughter and my beer? The labels for JD and L...

Five Gallon Carboy: SR7: Still tinkering; hops are growing

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2011/07/sr7-still-tinkering-hops-are-growing.html

Saturday, July 23, 2011. SR7: Still tinkering; hops are growing. That was a long stretch between batches of beer. After a four month hiatus, I've brewed another batch of Lil' Savannah. I've continued to tinker with the recipe, this time easing up on the sweetness by using a lighter crystal malt (40 instead of 60) and using less of it (1/2 lb. instead of a whole pound). I also changed the hops some. The homebrew store ( myLHBS. Depending on how this batch turns out, I'm entering it into the Meridian Pint.

Five Gallon Carboy: January 2011

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 31, 2011. JDP4: No contest, fourth time is a charm (right? You win some, you lose some, and sometimes you bow out of the game. Didn't pan out how I wanted, so I didn't bother entering it into The Bruery's homebrew competition. Not that I would've won. I hear that they were getting entries from around the world (including doc from the BN. So whatever homebrew wins, it will surely be an excellent beer. The JD Project. May produce an excellent beer one day, but not yet, and certainly not JDP3.

Five Gallon Carboy: JDP3: The Goldilocks batch?

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2010/11/jdp3-goldilocks-batch.html

Sunday, November 28, 2010. JDP3: The Goldilocks batch? Grinding rye by hand is as much fun as you think it is. My third batch of the JD Project. Is under way and the numbers look good so far. The original gravity came in at 1.094, which is quite high, but no where near as high as the 1.135 the first batch. Started with. If the attenuation is good, I should end up with an A.B.V. of around 8 or 9 percent, perfect for a scotch ale. In the beer. Man, that'll be a nice change. JDP3: The Goldilocks batch?

Five Gallon Carboy: SR5: Single Hop, Wet Hop

http://eatanddrinkitall.blogspot.com/2010/09/sr5-single-hop-wet-hop.html

Sunday, September 12, 2010. SR5: Single Hop, Wet Hop. Well, several months after planting hop rhizomes in my backyard, I've just finished my first batch of wet hop IPA using a full pound of fresh Centennial hops. Now if only I can get my own hop plants to produce some cones I'll be in business. I bought the fresh hops online from Rebel Brewer. They had a nice selection and decent prices. However, they left my can of Super Moss. Looking at the calendar, this batch of beer should be ready to drink by Oct&#...
