With that little pay you had to divide it and spend it on food, water, accomadations, and clothing. Food that peasants ate included wtered down ale and over yeasted bread. Not only am I late middle-aged, but just finished "Pillars of the Earth" (despite Oprah's recommendation) and am subsequently motivated to reread Henry Adams's "Mont St.Michel and Chartres."
