http://fpleasants.blogspot.com/2016/06/11-career-in-movies.html
Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Thursday, June 30, 2016. 11 - A Career in the Movies. Paris 2010 - On the set and ready to go! Is what it's called in French. Bit parts and faces in the crowd. In Hollywood they called it extra work, but I think it definitely has a better ring in French. I used to dream of being in the movies. For a long time I was bored with my office job at UNESCO and imagined a kind of stimulating parallel life working with a film crew. Actually, it started long before that . I guess I...

Frank's Musings and Meanderings: January 2016

Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Sunday, January 31, 2016. 6 - Leslie Caron . Looking for Gigi. On the set of Gigi 1958 with son Christopher and Maurice Chevalier. I saw Leslie Caron again last summer. Brenda and I had gone to Cadogan Hall in London for a concert of Rachmaninoff and Mahler. I spotted her sitting about three rows in front of us shortly before the lights dimmed. It wasn't the first time I have run into Leslie Caron since we spent part of Christmas Eve. Together at the Closerie des Lilas.

Frank's Musings and Meanderings: October 2016

Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Monday, October 31, 2016. 14 - Linwood and Doris. Doris and Linwood, Aberdeen 1957. My uncle Linwood was my father's older brother. He was the eldest of six children, and he had left home by the time Daddy started school. As for Bubba, he was obsessed with money, with not spending it. He would fixate on the worst scenario of finding himself without enough money, and each year he became more and more of a miser. Bubba and Daddy 1946. Would entail an extra expenditure, Linw...

Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Tuesday, November 29, 2016. 15 - Ben Hogan at the Masters, the Farrells, Grandmother Vivian, and Miss Lillian Carter of Plains, Georgia. Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer at the Masters (Getty photo). News of Arnold Palmer's recent death set off a chain of long-forgotten memories swimming around in my head, stemming from his first Master's Tournament victory in 1958. As unlikely as it now seems, I was actually there. But Faye did have so much more pizzazz! Margaret was the olde...

Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Thursday, December 31, 2015. 5 - Deep South Drama At Aberdeen Lake. Summertime at the lake 1953 (Moore County Historical Association). Looking back, t. Here was something vaguely idyllic about growing up in a sleepy southern town in the post-war years, but life was easy for only some. Of us There was a distinctly dark. Er side for others. This is a story about our one-time police chief, his teenage. The Aberdeen Lake was municipal property, and like much of the town.

Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Monday, May 30, 2016. 10 - Ousting Mrs. Oliver. Piano playing days circa 1955. She was a little on the dumpy side, with a sheaf of salt and pepper hair piled atop her head much. Like the hairdos at the turn of the 20th Century. Her 1950's horn-rimmed glasses completed the schoolmarm look. Which is all to say, no glamour girl was she! My grandmother Pleasants, who was an accomplished musician and who played the church organ for several. Decades, al so. At any rate, I was n...

http://fpleasants.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html
Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Sunday, February 28, 2016. 7 - Introducing Monsieur Gérard. I am not a good target for beggars. Big cities, like Paris or New York or London, have more than their share; and this marginal, often homeless, population increased noticeably during the 1980's. I tended to look the other way. I did a 180 degree turn at one point, just once, and the experience was rewarding, enlightening, and ultimately heartbreaking. We established a real bond, and I proposed that he do some wo...

http://fpleasants.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html
Frank's Musings and Meanderings. Saturday, April 30, 2016. 9 - Wedding in Zafferano. I returned to Taormina last year for the first time in well over 30 years. We didn't stay at the Timeo this time, Airbnb ha ving. Changed all that. Instead, we found. A wonderful rooftop apartment with a panoramic view of all the region - the Timeo's gardens below, the Ionian. Sea down to the right and Etna perfectly framed in the distance. A few hours drive around the surrounding countryside. Zafferano-Etna, at the bott...
