Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Creature feature: alligator lizard. Thanks to the cats i've seen several examples of the california alligator lizard,. Unfortunately most of the specimens they've shared with me were sans tail- -though usually otherwise unharmed. The colors and patterns of the scales are quite lovely. I'm happy to see the alligator lizards here (always good to have lizards in the garden) and i hope enough of them avoid the cats and keep the local population humming along. Cats in the garden.

Wednesday, August 19, 2015. Got the ducks into the kitchen garden, rounded up the cats and got them into their room, moved the chickens from their run into in their tractor. Lesson learned. i am sorry, my ducks. 1965 plymouth valiant station wagon. The car is in pretty good shape and staal drove it from the seller's house to ours but it will need a little going over before it's officially road worthy. I think zane approves of the new ride. I can't wait to take it to the nursery and fill it with goodies.

Neither staal nor i had seen any springtime honey bee activity around the hive in the north wall of the mill office so we decided to have a closer look. staal pulled nails and removed the board where the hive entry was and then peeled back the tar paper. the hive was abandoned. it was kind of eerie. ghostly quiet and still and empty where it used to be literally buzzing with life. Even when the days are really hot here it still tends to cool off towards evening. there's a window of time between the worst of the heat and the worst of the mosquitoes and no-see-ums when it's quite pleasant out. we occasionally take advantage of that time to enjoy our dinner outside. Friday, October 31, 2014. Saturday, October 25, 2014. Greenhouse (stucco removal- -east wall). Sunny and clear when i went out this morning but the forecast said there was a 70% chance of rain for the afternoon- -so before doing anything else i harvested as many dried bean pods as i could find and cut the last of the kabochas and seedstock summer squash from the vines and got them inside where they'd stay clean and dry. Saw 3 or 4 praying mantis egg casings while i was picking bean pods- -a happy sight.
