Tarkovsky and boredom →. January 21, 2009 · 1:16 pm. No more likenesses of reality, no idealistic images, nothing but a desert! What might it say about art to equate art with the desert? A geographical region is defined as a part of the earth that is distinctive from other areas and which extends as far as that distinction extends. [1]. 8230;] the concepts of the conscious mind are worthless. Feeling is the determining factor … and thus art arrives at non-objective representation at Suprematism. A few sc...

Addicted to images →. June 17, 2009 · 9:08 am. I love Joseph Conrad’s writing. So I’ve always been disturbed to hear that people think. Then someone whose opinions on most things I trust read it for herself and said its racist reputation was horribly justified. I’m not a historian, I’m someone who likes reading texts. But here it is. Is magnificent. It made me think of some of the music I love from around the time it was published: Gustav Mahler, Claude Debussy Debussy’s opera. The Poem of Ecstasy. Well,...

What’s so great about hope? She says. It’s just like religion: put up with the crap now because it’ll be all right after you’re dead and you can go and sit on a fluffy cloud for the rest of time. On memories and cameras. Yesterday the Tate, today the V&A →. June 21, 2010 · 2:16 pm. I’m coming back. It’s been a few years since I showed any artwork in public, almost a decade since I showed any photographs. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it, though, the whys and hows, and then there was a what photos I took when I was living in Melville, in South Africa, in 2008 and now there’s a when, two of them in fact. This is going nowhere. It’s depressing and humiliating. Maybe I should give it all up.

The first one troubled me a bit because, although I didn’t much like the artwork, the people were. Ah, but your duty to your public, I began to tell myself, but that voice was quickly told to shut up and stop being a pompous arse. What public? What careful selection process permitted me to post my opinions on a site of a respectable magazine? Enter your comment here.

Back to Rothko →. January 22, 2009 · 10:09 am. I’ve met a few people who think that the films of Andrei Tarkovsky [1]. Are boring. I understand. These films are slow. [2]. Most don’t have much of a story. There’s not much sex or violence or snappy dialogue. I was bored myself the first few times I watched Tarkovsky films. I loved the beautiful, enigmatic imagery, the evocation of dream logic, but it was an effort to pay attention. Then something happened. Bored, bored, bored. Put it like that and boredom...
