For the last few years, I have been using the K Desktop Environment. As my desktop of choice. In my opinion (and that of many others), it is the best desktop available for Unix-based systems. I started using KDE back in the days of the 1.0 release, and it has been on my systems ever since. Since about release 2.1 of KDE, I have been building it from sources, in order to get just the features and optimisations I need. This takes some time, but it is worth it in the long run, I feel.
