Antarctic Ali: January 2008
http://antarcticali.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 30 January 2008. January - The Month of Minke. We had a pod of Orca (killer whales) visit later on in the month, they were too far out in Ryder Bay to get any decent photos of them so I stood and watched them through binoculars. They were clearly playing around and having a lot of fun, one of the calves leapt completely out of the water – an awesome sight! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Grumpy Old Diver's Blog. Antarctic Ali: March 2009
http://antarcticali.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Monday, 23 March 2009. All in a day's work. I've just found this post that I wrote 3 years ago but didn't publish. I might get around to updating this site one day! Today has been my last Monday at Rothera (the Ernest Shackleton arrives on Thursday and we depart for the Falklands on Sunday). The 1st dive of the morning - Birgit and I went in off the wharf on the hunt for brachiopods which are pink bi-valve molluscs (rather like a mussel but fatter and pink! Let me know as I'm going to be unemployed this ...

Antarctic Ali: May 2008
http://antarcticali.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, 25 May 2008. We normally make a bit of an effort for Saturday night meals, this week we decided to do something a bit different and have a medieval banquet. There was the the usual Saturday morning rush to make costumes and decorations with outstanding results. Some of the decorations including an amazing candle holder that Al 'just knocked up'. Ferg and Matty partake in a spot of post-banquet jousting. Posing for a photo around the bar which most definately isn't in the 'lounge'. I took a long o...

Antarctic Ali: October 2007
http://antarcticali.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html
Monday, 15 October 2007. The 1st BAS Twin Otter. Well that's it - Winter is officially over. The first of the BAS Twin Otters and the Dash 7 arrived today bringing BAS personnel and this means the start of the Antarctic Summer season. Winter seems to have flown by, I can't decide if I'm ready for summer or not. It's great to have a new input of people but having spent the last 6 months with just the 22 of us I have a feeling it's going to take some getting used to. Sunday, 14 October 2007. Once on top of...

Antarctic Ali: Sea Ice Excursions
http://antarcticali.blogspot.com/2008/07/sea-ice-excursions.html
Saturday, 26 July 2008. After a disappointing sea ice year last year, when 'travel' was limited to access to dive holes in Hangar Cove, it was a brilliant experience to finally be able to walk on water around Rothera Point this week. We were out testing the thickness of the ice which remained between 20 and 40cm. Massive icebergs get trapped as the ice forms. Ferg and Jason admiring the awesome views. A huuuuuge berg with Jenny Island in the background. Heading towards South Cove. Grumpy Old Diver's Blog.
