Burton Wanderers FC | The Ball is Round
https://theballisround.co.uk/2014/05/17/burton-wanderers-fc
May 17, 2014. Let me take you back to the 1894/95 season when Burton Wanderers were elected into the Football League Second Division after winning the Midlands League title. They weren’t however, to be the first team from the Derbyshire town to be playing in the Football League. Two years previously Burton Swifts had been part of the Football Alliance Division that had merged with the Football League to form a two-tier structure. This entry was posted in Non league football. And tagged Burton Albion.

Just bloody shoot! | The Ball is Round

July 17, 2015. West Ham United 1 Birkirkara FC 0 – The Boleyn Ground – Thursday 16th July 2015. It seems that someone didn’t do their homework on Birkirkara. Their strength was the centre-back pairing including the vastly experienced Argentinian Mauricio Mazzetti, especially in the air. So what did West Ham do? The Maltese fans had chartered a plane to bring them to London for arguably the biggest game in their history and they brought colour and noise to the away section that some Premier League clubs w...

August 24, 2016. Will Fulham win the sack race this season? Mike Miles reports on a trip down to Craven Cottage. I may support West Ham, but I love going to Craven Cottage. Not least because it is a 45-minute walk from my front door, most of it along the banks of the Thames, with some very enticing pubs en route. Fulham 2 Cardiff City 2 – Craven Cottage – Saturday 20th August 2016. Skipper Scott Parker was still doing his tidy thing in midfield , not surprisingly the only player to start here who feature...

July 29, 2014. After a long overdue absence from these pages, our Englishman in New York, Luge Pravda is BACK. And when we say BACK we really mean BACK. Whilst the Guinness International Champions Cup is talking taking place across the States, we wanted Luge to experience REAL US soccer and tell us had the World Cup effect kicked in yet. Miami, Seattle, Columbus Ohio? Nope Somewhere even better than that…. Of course the smartphone all but killed off Kodak many years ago but subletting their old parking l...

July 30, 2015. Screw you guys, I’m going home. Tonight’s game was a bit of a bonus as it gave me the chance to have a little look at one of our opponents next season, Burgess Hill Town who swept all before them last season and judging by their pre-season acquisitions will be quite a proposition this season. Not that you can ever learn anything from friendlies, apparently. South Park 1 Burgess Hill Town 4 – King George’s Field – Wednesday 29th July 2015. This entry was posted in Non league football. Economic Theories | The Ball is Round
https://theballisround.co.uk/economic-theories-explained-by-football
Part 16 – The Moral Hazard Theory. Moral Hazard not Micky Hazard. The reason why is that the Moral Hazard Theory works under the premise of information asymmetry, in other words where one party in the transaction having more information and acts or behaves inappropriately than the other party, normally the one who has to pay the consequences of the risk, which in the above example is the player knowing about his injury but not revealing it to the club. Part 15 – Disruptive Influencers. The Doom Cycle is ...

Getting our backsides Tanned on the opening day | The Ball is Round
https://theballisround.co.uk/2015/08/09/getting-our-backsides-tanned-on-the-opening-day
August 9, 2015. Getting our backsides Tanned on the opening day. Then of course we have the kit issues – you go online, choose what you want and it just arrives in the post right? Alas, if it was only that simple. A lot of it comes to the UK via lorry, who have to use the Channel Tunnel. So delays such as the ones we have seen have caused issues for many clubs, the most ironic being Folkestone Invicta who can probably see the delivery lorry in question with a good pair of binoculars. Football can be a cr...

Just who made the decision to play that side? | The Ball is Round
https://theballisround.co.uk/2015/08/08/just-who-made-the-decision-to-play-that-side
August 8, 2015. Just who made the decision to play that side? Last week the Hammers were cruising at 2-0 up at The Boleyn Ground. Collins is then sent off and the team fall apart. Players get sent off week in, week out and don’t lose, or even concede a goal. The footballing guru David Pleat always tells us it’s harder to play against ten men than eleven. That’s the theory of Numerical Disadvantage. But why did it all go wrong? And what is the ambition this year? This entry was posted in European Football.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail | The Ball is Round
https://theballisround.co.uk/2015/07/31/failing-to-prepare-is-preparing-to-fail
July 31, 2015. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Fortunately, the only credit (bar the support from the fans) The Hammers could take from the game was their ability to take penalties meaning they progressed into the Third Qualifying Round by the skin of their teeth. Drawn to play Romanian side FC Astra Giurgui you would expect Bilic to have learnt his lesson, prepared correctly and told the team to keep their discipline.right. Despite having over 66% of possession, 15 shots on target and 15 corner...
