When both patterns are combined there are still several clear landmarks which cross all the boundaries and create a cohesive map of the diatonic system of tones on the fretboard. Why then, is it so difficult for so many people to make sense of the guitar fretboard. . Though the structure of music is the same on guitar and piano, the distribution of notes on the guitar follows a grid pattern, rather than a linear sequence.
