The Well's water exits through a 300 foot long cave, emerging on the southeast corner of the mound into an irrigation ditch constructed over 1,000 years ago. Jack Beckman was a Park Ranger and then Volunteer at the Well for many years. He did extensive research about the Well — the geology, ecology and the people. He wrote A History of Montezuma Well. In 1878, George Rothrock, a photographer from Phoenix, came by the Well and left his ad, printed in black paint on the cave wall inside the Well: "Photos by Rothrock, Phoenix".
