An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Friday, May 29, 2015. This is another old-time word that you can still occasionally hear around Ocracoke village. betimes. It means "early.". Betimes seems to have become common in the 13th century in England, but it is seldom heard today. Rise up betimes, and take a stroll along the beach. You will probably experience a beautiful sunrise, and you might even find a scotch bonnet. Thursday, May 28, 2015. One of the Most Mischievous and Vilest Villains. Penned a ...

I know most of you may think I am crazy but growing up in Florida and being a photographer, I just cannot get enough of it. There ar...

The Outer Banks Offer Surf, Sand and So Much More. Expand your Outer Banks beach trip by including wild horses, a giant sand dune, a walk-through history and the Crystal Coast. NC 12 turns from blacktop to sand in Corolla. From that point north it’s the territory of four-wheel-drive vehicles and wild horses. Historians believe Spanish explorers first brought horses to the Outer Banks in the 1500s, a story that’s shared at the Corolla Wild Horse Museum. In June the dune hosts the Rogallo Kite Festival.

An Occasional Journal of Daily Island Life. Friday, January 30, 2015. Not long ago I was reading a book I received as a Christmas present, More Desired than Our Owne Salvation, The Roots of Christian Zionism. On page 72 I came across this sentence: "In 1605 [English] authorities discovered the 'Gunpowder Plot' designed by Catholics to assassinate [King] James as well as the Puritans then sitting in Parliament.". Anyone want to organize a bonfire on the beach next fall in memory of "Guy Hall"? I knew virt...

As you can tell, I love yellow flowers against a bright blue sky. These black eyed susans were in my parents garden. Walking at Squantum Point Park, in Quincy. This park has fields of wildflowers and right now the tansy is in bloom, as well as some purple loosestrife. Walking around St. Morritz Lake, also in Quincy. I’ve never walked here in the summer before, so I was pretty excited to discover it full of lilypads! This entry was posted in Hiking. August 15, 2016. It really was an amazing place to walk ...
