Making languages matter!: June 2013
http://froggyval.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Blog about teaching and learning in Modern Foreign languages. Tuesday, 18 June 2013. Teach Meet Clevedon - are you a Dolphin or a member of the Ungrateful Dead? Blimey - when did you last get rock music and popcorn at an INSET event? Here's what I have been thinking about from one of the speakers and I will try to write a bit more shortly. Keynote man was Hywel Roberts. Hywel mentioned these things. You must address your coverage of the curriculum by all means but with creativity. Can we be bothered?
Making languages matter!: Mind your shoulders!
http://froggyval.blogspot.com/2012/05/mind-your-shoulders.html
Blog about teaching and learning in Modern Foreign languages. Sunday, 27 May 2012. I have been a bit quiet for some time - I am a Head of Department and I find it very hard to make as much time as I would like for writing my own posts, doing the business of reflection, sharing new materials or just writing about the stuff I do in class with ordinary kids, day to day. Like most teachers, I live with guilt about it too! See your doctor and don't ignore your aching shoulder! View my complete profile. Keepin...

Maybe you are very familiar with this guy, but I thought the link was worth investigating in detail. Blog about teaching and learning in Modern Foreign languages. Monday, 24 January 2011. MYLO for Merlin John. Here is the link to my article for Merlin John. Mid January. I was delighted to be able to talk about MYLO for his super website. We are using MYLO with all of our KS3 classes as best we can and giving it a real go. I like it a lot - it's modern, trendy, the pupils can get going on it fairly intuitively apart from a couple of spots where teacher knowledge really helps. If you haven't yet experimen...

The Langwitch Chronicles: iPads and Languages
http://www.langwitch.co.uk/2013/11/ipads-and-languages.html
My journey through the world of languages and education. Saturday, 30 November 2013. Back in September, I learned that I had been extremely fortunate because my bid for iPads for the MFL department had been successful. After several hiccups, the much talked about tablets finally arrive in my room on Wednesday. So, keeping it simple so far what have I used the iPads for? I also got my y11s using Sock Puppets to talk about what they eat and sports they do (Healthy Living! Finally Socrative. Just fab! I sta...
The Langwitch Chronicles: Lingo Bingo
http://www.langwitch.co.uk/2011/10/lingo-bingo.html
My journey through the world of languages and education. Saturday, 22 October 2011. I always presume that activities I do to practice vocabulary are old hat and everyone already knows about them. Therefore I often don't tell people about activities I do, or don't expain them. Anyway, for those of you who don't know how to play it here it is:. Give out plain paper - it doesn't have to be plain. Now put one of the grids to one side so that you are just working with 1 grid. On the grid you are working with ...
The Langwitch Chronicles: More iPad ideas
http://www.langwitch.co.uk/2014/02/more-ipad-ideas.html
My journey through the world of languages and education. Thursday, 6 February 2014. I've finally got round to using the iPads properly again this week. Until this week, I'd used them for Y11s to prepare for mock exams and other odds and ends. Firstly, I used Popplet. Sent to me at the end of the day and I actually ended up having to go round and do that later.but these are the little hurdles I'm happy to overcome as we all learn how best to use the iPads. Site, to which we have a subscription. Rather...
The Langwitch Chronicles: July 2013
http://www.langwitch.co.uk/2013_07_01_archive.html
My journey through the world of languages and education. Friday, 12 July 2013. It's no secret that I am a huge fan of co-operative learning structures and one of my favourites is Quiz Quiz Trade, which I blogged about here. And use it regularly for vocabulary building, review and drilling, but I have also been trialling other structures this year and one I hit upon recently has gone down a storm since trying it. Once chosen, all team members write their own answers on their MWB, without showing their team.
The Langwitch Chronicles: Active Learning - Infinite Scrabble
http://www.langwitch.co.uk/2012/10/active-learning-infinite-scrabble.html
My journey through the world of languages and education. Saturday, 6 October 2012. Active Learning - Infinite Scrabble. Here's another one I've just recently started using again and I really like it for Key Stage 4. This one is really simple and takes next to no preparation, another reason that I love it! I didn't know how competitive my pupils could get! My next task is to work out how it can be less wasteful on paper, maybe laminate grids and use mini whiteboard pens. 6 October 2012 at 11:11. You have ...

My journey through the world of languages and education. Wednesday, 26 June 2013. UK eTwinning Conference 2013. As an eTwinning Ambassador. I was delighted to be able to attend this year's eTwinning Conference at the NCTL. In Nottingham at the weekend, after having missed last year due to work commitments. As ever, the whole event filled me with enthusiasm and inspired me to get going with more eTwinning. Projects in the coming academic year. My first workshop was run by David Mitchell. The Langwitch Chronicles: December 2013
http://www.langwitch.co.uk/2013_12_01_archive.html
My journey through the world of languages and education. Saturday, 14 December 2013. More iPad fun this week. I have always been very clear in my head that technology should be used to do what you couldn't do on paper and therefore avoid using the iPads just for the sake of saying I've used them. This week, therefore, I tried something that I could have done with worksheets but that had an extra layer added due to the use of the iPads. The previous week, as something that she had tried and worked. I also...
The Langwitch Chronicles: iPads week 2
http://www.langwitch.co.uk/2013/12/ipads-week-2.html
My journey through the world of languages and education. Saturday, 7 December 2013. Not much to report on the iPads front this week. I also experimented with more personalised learning for y11. Those who had finished the extended writing task they had been set were given an iPad and worked on the Duolingo app. Those who got that far, absolutely loved it and have gone home to download the a app at home, in order to continue with it at home. The Langwitch Chronicles: Active Learning - Follow Me Cards

My journey through the world of languages and education. Thursday, 20 September 2012. Active Learning - Follow Me Cards. Image courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net. This is a hot topic at our school at the moment, since Ofsted told us that there were too many "passive learners". In fact, Active Learning was the topic of our INSET on Tuesday. I am an enormous fan of the TARSIA software, which I was introduced to by Clare Seccombe. Who has blogged about it here. It worked really well! All pupils spoke some Fr...
