An avocado for 80c. A small bunch of fresh Thai basil for $1. And (as a treat) a lotus seed moon pie. Links to this post. I am ...

Cat Lady in Kyrgyzstan: March 2013

Saturday, March 30, 2013. Café Nooruz (Кафе Нооруз). May 25, 2008. Café Nooruz was, until quite recently, my favorite restaurant in Bishkek. Despite its not entirely stunning ambiance, the lagman (a Kyrgyz noodle soup) and shashlik (meat on a stick) was fabulous. Additionally, the fact that it’s located directly across the street from the school means that we go there all the time. And did I mention that it’s super cheap? When our waitress returned, I asked her what kind of meat it was:. We’ve been...

http://catladyinkyrgyzstan.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 9, 2013. Back in Bishkek, back to the States. July 31, 2013. My initial plan was to return to Bishkek on Saturday, July 27. I’d reserved a bed in the Sakura hostel for the 27. Khachapuri at Mimino, pizza at VEFA, and a calzone at Cyclone. (Cyclone has the best hot chocolate in the world, but as I was so hot by the time I got there, I couldn’t bring myself to order it; I had one of their milkshakes instead.). Curry at The Host. Khachapuri Adjaruli at Mimino. At 1:30am on July 31. 8221; Um...

Cat Lady in Kyrgyzstan: October 2013

Thursday, October 31, 2013. In which I meet the other American in the area. July 9, 2013. Again we were crammed into a van filled with all sorts of building supplies, electrical gear, and cooking supplies. I should also mention that this can is in a permanent hot-wire status; the wiring has been pulled out of the original ignition and routed into a pseudo-ignition contraption. To start the van, one must insert a flat-head screwdriver into this contraption and twist it like a key. Brilliant! That night, a...

Cat Lady in Kyrgyzstan: A weekend at Lake Issyk Kul
http://catladyinkyrgyzstan.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-weekend-at-lake-issyk-kul.html
Saturday, November 24, 2012. A weekend at Lake Issyk Kul. February 20, 2008. Last weekend my boss, Kendje, and her husband, Bayan took me, as well as K and A and H their host daughter to Lake Issyk Kul. It was an incredible trip. This is where we stopped for lunch. You can see our tire tracks to the right, where we drove down from the main road. This is the monument to the massacres of 1916 as seen from the highway. A passerby washes and prays in the sacred spring. K dances on the ice at Balykchy. Next t...

Retired Reflections: February 2006
http://retiredreflections.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 28, 2006. On Friday we went to a wildlife refuge north of here. We led a hike for a group we belong to. We had a total of 19 which for me is the limit on these hikes. On Thursday the wind blew hard through this area so we were anticipating tumbleweeds strewn across our path but we lucked out. Had a beautiful day and ate our lunch on top of a mesa. Posted by Mary @ 7:37 AM. Links to this post. Monday, February 20, 2006. In a comment on a blog I stumbled upon this wonderful site. It is ha...

Cat Lady in Kyrgyzstan: May 2013
http://catladyinkyrgyzstan.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 2, 2013. I leave for Kyrgyzstan in less than a week - meaning that I am totally packed and ready to go right now. I am an obsessive packer and re-packer (at least when I'm getting ready to go somewhere exciting), and I've been working on my packing list for some time now. I may have had some items in the suitcase for over a month or so at this point. :-). Now, if I'm moving. This shot is for scale, so you can see the size of my two bags relative to my full-sized bed. Supposedly it works as ...

Sunday, November 24, 2013. Urban Exploration in Rural Kyrgyzstan. July 23, 2013. To accomplish before the start of the fall semester on August 19th; I may as well enjoy doing nothing for as long as I can. Plus it's pretty damn scenic here. July 22, 2013.
