I Love Snow – fromthespiritsofancestorsandeverydaylife

https://fromthespiritsofancestorsandeverydaylife.wordpress.com/2016/01/22/i-love-snow

January 22, 2016. January 23, 2016. I have always been enthralled with snow. There’s an ethereal feeling when snowflakes are falling and the world seems quiet and serene. When you think about the myriad of crystalline shapes of snowflakes and how each one is different, it’s an amazing realization that they come together to present such a uniform presence. You only get old when you stop playing and having fun…or so I’ve heard. From The Spirits of Ancestors and Everyday Life. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

BLAHG emily j. cole. Saturday, January 28, 2012. Ya only get married. twice! The Wedding Party with our Families. About 25 friends and family members were witnesses as we exchanged our vows on the stage and set of My Fair Lady. Anthony, David and Drew. I'm so grateful to these guys for their perfect playing. After the ceremony, we walked across the street to Tarrant's Cafe for an absolutely mouth-watering dinner and champagne toasts. Following dinner, we headed back to the Empire for a dessert buffet rec...

BLAHG emily j. cole. Sunday, May 13, 2012. Mom, can I have this? We'll see' means no! How many times did that exchange play out when we were kids? At least once a week during the trip to Granite Falls to get groceries and [maybe] stop by the Ben Franklin, at least when Grandma was working. I'm sure it happened even more frequently when we visited the metropolis of Marshall and went to Woolworths, ShopKo, Alco, and (on rare occasions) the mall. Ah, the eternal childhood lament. Ask us to put it back.

BLAHG emily j. cole. Friday, September 14, 2012. In lieu of writing about something heady, I thought I'd share a tasty recipe. I don't know about you, but our tomatoes are going gangbusters. I made this fresh pasta sauce last weekend and was not disappointed! Alas, I did not take any photos of it because we yummed it up before it occurred to me. (The photo at left is from Kitchen Confidante.). I used the recipe from Diana Rattray in About.com's Southern Food section. Garlic cloves, peeled and minced.

BLAHG emily j. cole. Friday, August 31, 2012. I like your Christ;. I do not like. 8212; Mohandas Ghandi. This quote has been on my mind a lot in the last couple months. There are likely thousands of others who share this viewpoint, and I can't say I blame them. I can't help but wonder about the traits of those Christians Ghandi encountered. Were they self-righteous? Did they justify nefarious behavior for the purposes of proselytizing? John 16:33) He didn't say, "you might. Luke 6:22) Not " if. Easy in t...

BLAHG. | emily j. cole: Solveig

http://emilyjcole.blogspot.com/2013/04/solveig.html

BLAHG emily j. cole. Friday, April 12, 2013. Solveig's favorite musical piece was Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. And once she took time out of my lesson to walk me down to the listening room, pull the LP off the shelf (because "analog sounds better") and play it for me. We sat in silence listening to the gorgeous music, which she later pointed out was brilliantly used in the Charlie Sheen movie, Platoon. To this day, I think of her whenever I hear those gut-wrenching crescendos. Blessed be her memory.

BLAHG emily j. cole. Sunday, June 17, 2012. You know that wonderful feeling when you go to a store and the experience is so good that when it's over, you can hardly believe it wasn't a dream? You go in, there's no line, the staff is friendly and treat you like royalty, the thing you want is on sale, plus you get a bonus item, and a coupon for a future visit, just because you're a valued customer? That's how my Dad always makes me feel. When my car got stolen a dozen years ago, Dad hunted all over the pla...

BLAHG emily j. cole. Monday, October 10, 2011. Staying on my soap box. Deep within my soul lies a passion for justice. I come by this naturally, as both my parents often get fired up in defense of "the little guy.". Over the last week or so, we've all been getting fired up over a little guy. The cause, "Jacob's Law," is being spearheaded by my friend from high school, Sarah Corder Guggisberg. Jacob's Law is a piece of proposed legislation in Minnesota that would require notification of both. I have told ...

BLAHG emily j. cole. Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Movin' on up (part 1). For some, this might be old news. for others, it might be a total shock. But at the end of this month, Robbie and I are moving to Minnesota. Yes, it is cold there. No, it is not Canada. (Well, not quite anyway.). My family, all of whom still live in Minnesota, is thrilled about us being closer. Our soon-to-be St. Paul home. We are optimistic that Robb will find work, as the Twin Cities metro area is a regional printing hub. Eventuall...

BLAHG emily j. cole. Friday, July 6, 2012. A slap in the Facebook. Facebook. That wonderful, awful, social networking site that has permanently changed the way the world communicates. Tonight, I deactivated my account for the first time since I opened it in 2007 or whenever it was. Yup, I'm now one of "those" people. I don't know how long I'll be gone. I just want to remind myself of what life was like before. Overall, I think the pros of Facebook outweigh the cons. But for me, at least at the moment...

From The Spark To The Flame

From The Spark To The Flame. Each of us has a spark of life inside us, and our highest endeavor ought to be to set off that spark in one another. - Kenny Ausubel. Sunday, November 20, 2011. When I begin to think over the past few months about being a teacher, I realize just how vital "thinking" has been. For whatever reason I'm not the kind of person that can just do something in life. I have to think about it. 1 I am not typical. 2 I wish to educate differently and support parents as I do so. I want the...

The Forgotten Jewish Element of the Women’s Liberation Movement. The complex identities of both Jewish women’s liberationists and identified Jewish feminists should be recognized as important parts of the histories of feminism and Judaism. Today, when the politics of identity are frequently derided as diversionary or labeled deleterious groupthink, the legacy of these pioneering feminists is instructive. Zero tolerance discipline policies won’t fix school shootings. Derek W. Black. Chandra D. Bhimull.
