A couple of weeks ago, a movie was shown in the cinemas and it’s still showing, although it’s coming to the end of its run. The movie had an uninteresting title – “Ant-Man” – but what is interesting is that Ant-Man is one of the original superheroes of the Avengers in the Marvel comics series. Obviously, the name Ant Man...

Today being a Sunday, for most of us, it would be a day of rest. But more often than not, it is quite the opposite. Not that today is a day of unrest. But resting might be the last thing we can ever do today. Or we would doing our groceries, visit the in-laws, going shopping (it’s the Great Singapore Sale! The man ...

Ecclesiasticus 3:2-6, 12-14 / Colossians 3:12-21 / Lk 2:22-40. If we are from a traditional Catholic family, then our homes would have been blessed by a priest already. For traditional Catholic families, it is important, and even necessary for the home to be blessed. So it is the usual practice to invite a priest to come over to the home to bless it. Especially ...

There was (and there still is) a practice in the Church of the blessing of throats, although not much emphasis is given to it. It falls on the day after the feast of the Presentation, which is on the 2nd February. It is also to sanctify the throat and to protect it against spiritual ailments like speaking prof...

We know what a plank is. Or at least we know what the initial meaning is. It is a long, thin, flat piece of timber, used especially in building and flooring. But words have a tendency to morph from its initial obvious meaning to some other meanings that might make us wonder where they come from. Sounds too g...

Weekday Homilies: December 2014

http://frstephenyim-weekdays.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Mary,Mother of God, Thursday, 01-01-15. Numbers 6:22-27 / Galatians 4:4-7 / Lk 2:16-21. Today is a special day in terms of the time-line of the events in our lives. Today we begin a new year. We look at what lies ahead of us, and we wonder what it will be like. Yet we can look back at the not-so-old year, and we can see what it had been like. So as we look at what lies before us and what lies behind us, the Church invites us to look at Mary. From the Annunciation to the Crucif...

Daily scripture readings from the Missal. 05 Mar 2014, Ash Wednesday; St. John Joseph of the Cross. Even now, says the LORD,. Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment. Perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing, Offerings and libations for the LORD, your God. Blow the trumpet in Zion!

But above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your “Yes” mean “Yes” and your “No” mean “No,” that you may not incur condemnation. Psalm 103:1-2, 3-4, 8-9, 11-12. R (8a) The Lord is kind and merciful. Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. 8221; They...

Weekday Homilies

Wednesday, March 28, 2018. Holy Thursday, 29-03-2018. Exodus 12:1-8, 11-14 / 1 Cor 11:23-26 / John 13:1-15. With this Mass, the Church begins the Sacred Paschal Triduum. Triduum means three days. So in simple terms, it means that today, tomorrow and the day after, we recall and remember the great events of our salvation in Jesus who was crucified, died, was buried and is risen. But from the profound institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper, the gospel talks about something rather mundane – t...

Fr. Steve Porter

Fr Steve Porter, STL. St Catherine of Siena. The prayer that convicts us! Don’t say: “Our Father”. If you’re not going to behave like a son or daughter, or treat others like brothers and sisters;. Don’t say: “who art in heaven”. If you’re only thinking of and loving earthly stuff;. Don’t say: “hallowed be thy name”. If you’re only interested in the false gods of materialism;. Don’t say: “thy kingdom come”. If you don’t believe, or are not preparing yourself for it;. Don’t say: “Amen”. E-mail Fr. Steve.

Steve's blog

Wednesday, 26 March 2014. Bernadette arrives each morning at about 8.00am, usually as we are finishing breakfast. We are able to cook a little for ourselves – and breakfast is varied and nutritious as long as we like fruit, eggs, toast and peanut butter! Bernadette prepares lunch – salad type food, and also cooks dinner. And dinner is tasty, varied and supersubstantial! Somehow in my last visit the market had escaped me, so a visit today was a first, and somewhat enlightening. And within the market there...
