Green for the rest of us: How NOT to make liquid soap
http://tacomagreenmama.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-not-to-make-liquid-soap.html
Green for the rest of us. Tuesday, April 17, 2012. How NOT to make liquid soap. Always looking for new ideas, I tried it. The soap created was gelatinous and difficult to pump out of the bottle, and after about a month, the pumps on all three liquid soap bottles in my house (in 1.5 baths and a kitchen) stopped working. OK, so back to my old method! I bought Kiss My Face peace soap, made from Castile soap; an 8-oz bottle costs $2.99 at Grocery Outlet). I empty my 24-oz dish liquid into an empty gallon-siz...

Green for the rest of us: May 2012
http://tacomagreenmama.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Green for the rest of us. Monday, May 7, 2012. The good news and the bad news. The good news is, the City of Tacoma is now collecting food waste. As part of its biweekly garbage and recycling pickups. The bad news is, I don't live in Tacoma but a near suburb, so I can't participate. The good news is, I have been consistently collecting food scraps in a container under my sink, and covering it with bokashi. Then I ignored it for two weeks, and just checked it again today. No fruit flies, and the maggo...

Green for the rest of us: March 2012
http://tacomagreenmama.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Green for the rest of us. Tuesday, March 13, 2012. So my daughter planted a potato. About ten days ago, my daughter was helping me peel potatoes for dinner. She noticed eyes growing on a few of them and asked me what they were. I told her that if you buried a potato, roots would grow out of the eyes and become a new potato plant. So what did she do? My daughter and I replanted the potato plant in a large pot on our balcony, and added additional soil around it (something the Master Gardener recommended we...

Green for the rest of us: July 2012
http://tacomagreenmama.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Green for the rest of us. Sunday, July 1, 2012. Quinoa success at last. the secret! I've blogged a few. About my dislike of the taste of quinoa, mitigated only by dousing the stuff in lots of spices. I finally learned the reason for my dislike. At a recent church potluck, a friend made a quinoa dish. I tried it, like I always do (since quinoa is supposed to be good for you! Well, because it's coated with a bitter substance called saponin that protects the grain from insects and fungi. Life The Green Way.

Green for the rest of us: Ragging on quinoa... again!
http://tacomagreenmama.blogspot.com/2010/12/ragging-on-quinoa-again.html
Green for the rest of us. Friday, December 31, 2010. Ragging on quinoa. again! In my never-ending quest to find natural ways to manage my hair, I recently read a recipe for exfoliating one's scalp. The recipe called for mixing 1 TBSP of either quinoa or brown sugar with several tablespoons of conditioner, massaging that into your scalp, and rinsing it out, followed by washing your hair. Post, I decided that I might as well use this healthy but (to me, anyway) foul-tasting grain for. Eco-friendly Living -...

Friday, November 6, 2009. We bombed through the SW corner of Serbia, free-camped for one quick night on a random street in Skopje, Macedonia, and then arrived in Greece. This is where it all fell apart. Greece had it out for us! Why yes, yes it is. And first you'll have to kill 8 good sized spiders on the shower floor before dousing yourself with ice water. Nada Nada single one. This is the famed Acropolis? IF you can see it through all the scaffolding. The job market sucks. Why not make your own? Eviden...

The Vision Quest of Life. The Voices now have an outlet…. Food, Glorious Food! March 13, 2011. The Honeymoon is Over? When I first became vegetarian a year ago and eventually vegan, I was full of enthusiasm and curiosity. I wanted to know anything and everything about being vegan, food issues, and of course, yummy recipes. These days that enthusiasm has gone from boiling to a simmer, and I am settling in to a lifestyle that works best for me. Life happens, and things change. Last year, there have been so...
