Memorial Day is my traditional weekend to plant tomatoes and peppers – and although I did start transplanting those a couple of weeks ago, many more got planted yesterday morning. Sunday, August 3, 2008. Tzatziki cucumber recipe for a hot day. 1 cucumber,coarsely grated. 2 garlic cloves, chopped. 2 tablespoons olive oil. 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Combine ingredients, chill and serve. Delicious with falafel, on a hamburger or for dipping good bread…Refreshing and cooling on a hot day. I used to get this at a Turkish stand at a farmers market in Germany. Love that garlic! Where did July go? Whew – how did it get to be August already? So, what have we been up to? Thursday, June 10, 2010. Greens loving the rain! The garden is doing well! Warmer temperatures, followed by abundant rain yesterday, and crops are happy. Honey and bumble bees are covering the purple blossoms of the hairy vetch cover crops. Kale is gorgeous - and oh so nutrititious. Garlic scapes are swaying, raindrops hanging from the tips. Beans are reaching for the trellis. Sugar snaps are flowering, and crunchy sweet sugar sugarsnaps will be in your hands soon. Lettuce heads are huge and colorful.

Well, when you go away for 48 hours during squash season, you come back to a few surprises.Our assortment of patty pan and Zephyr summer squashes, as well as yellow zuccchini have been doing well! Now is your chance to ask for extras, shred them and put in freezer for addition to winter stews and casseroles. 2 lb yellow squash. 1 c butter, melted. 1 tbsp. plus 2 tsp. baking powder. 160;try adding a little lemon extract or grated lemon peel for some extra zing. Wednesday, June 25, 2008. We just had our first batch of chickens butchered last week - what a beautiful batch of roasters! Roasters in the 6 pound range are hard to come by, and this batch averaged 6 pounds! We had also lucked out the week before when Tom found a stainless steel cabinet type smoker at Penn State Salvage - so we will be able to offer smoked, fully cooked chickens starting with our next batch. We just experimented and smoked two birds, and boy were they DELICIOUS! 1 tablespoon coarse salt.

As for pets, we have a growing number of these. Our faithful farm dogs, Prince (German Shepherd), Tasha (Kuvasz) came to Canyon with us. We acquired Carter, an obstinate Lhasa Apso, in a moment of weakness a few years ago. Zoey is our sole surviving feline from 2009, down from a troupe of 3 queenly cats who have presided over the farm. Our vision is sustainable, organic farming beyond oil. Small is beautiful. Julie, Leah and Grant. 5 Norwegian Fjord horses. 40 Chickens (heritage breeds).
