Fur and Feathers 5000

Fur and Feathers 5000. Saturday, 21 December 2013. 2013 Year in Review. January – winter birding in Alberta … what could be more fun? I did a January big day with Phil Cram, birding from Waterton to Calgary recording 44 species. With not many species around, most of which I’ve photographed many times, it is always a challenge to get a decent flight shot of the winter birds. As you can see from my Gyrfalcon photo, there is lots of room for improvement. Chimanga Caracara - El Calafate. June – Ray Woo...

Fur and Feathers 5000: July 2013

http://www.furandfeathers5000.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Fur and Feathers 5000. Tuesday, 23 July 2013. I don’t usually bird very much in July but this year poor weather in May and June and some family travels left many holes in my year list. In the past three weeks. I have made day trips to Water Valley, Banff, Waterton and some local sloughs. While the birding is definitely better in June there are still lots of interesting birds to be seen in the summer. Eventually the two were reunited. American Coot with three young. Eared Grebe with young on back. America...

Fur and Feathers 5000: May 2013

http://www.furandfeathers5000.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Fur and Feathers 5000. Thursday, 30 May 2013. Alberta in the merry month of May. After a seven week hiatus, I return to the world of blogging. Here in Alberta, May really marks the beginning of spring and the return of the migratory birds. As always, we try to urge the birds northward before they are ready and then, in the blink of an eye, migration is over. The month began with a visit from my friends, Alistair and Sveta. The weekend of May 4. My wife and I drove our guests up to Jasper National Park.

Fur and Feathers 5000: January 2013

http://www.furandfeathers5000.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Fur and Feathers 5000. Thursday, 31 January 2013. When I started birding 25 years ago, I thought it was a cheap hobby – after all, you just needed a pair of binoculars and a field guide. Over the years, my gear has expanded and I have learned that there is no such thing as a cheap hobby. Travelling with all this gear can be a challenge, particularly if one will be travelling on small planes. First, some basics:. As a result, I try to fit everything in a mid-sized backpack (30 litres). For my current trip...

A Calgary Birder: Magic Moments at the Nest Box

http://calgarybirder.blogspot.com/2013/06/magic-moments-at-nest-box.html

Saturday, 1 June 2013. Magic Moments at the Nest Box. I also came across this short video. Of him putting one together and talking about the different types of nest. One of our decorated nestboxes. Student and parent volunteer attaching a box to the fencepost. I was a little skeptical about how much success we would have with attracting birds, due to the urban location, and late May timing. But then something magical happened…. Tree Swallows, Tachycineta bicolor. Photo by Prairie Birder. 1 June 2013 at 1...

A Calgary Birder: Where in the World is Calgary Birder? - Clue #4 (and last!)

Tuesday, 2 July 2013. Where in the World is Calgary Birder? Clue #4 (and last! I'm heading off on an exciting trip this summer: a family vacation with lots of opportunities to see many new birds, as well as other cool wildlife. Rather than just telling you where I'm headed, I figured it might be fun to post a few clues in the form of photos of birds that could/should turn up on this trip. This last clue should tell you exactly in which country we are spending about three-quarters of our trip! Angela G ha...

A Calgary Birder: Birding in Bowmont Park

http://calgarybirder.blogspot.com/2013/06/birding-in-bowmont-park.html

Friday, 7 June 2013. Birding in Bowmont Park. As was to be expected with the intermittent, at times heavy rain, the light was not very good for photography but I did get a few decent shots, as captioned below. There's also a species list at the bottom of this post which is probably fairly typical for this area at this time of year, although Violet-Green Swallow and Common Yellowthroat were nice treats and we were surprised not to hear any Warbling Vireo. There were lots of Grey Catbirds. Notes From a NW ...

A Calgary Birder: November 2012

http://calgarybirder.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Monday, 19 November 2012. A Nemesis No Longer. Some of my childhood was spent in Ontario and I clearly remember seeing Pileated Woodpeckers a few times in the forests around Peterborough and Ottawa, mostly while out cross-country skiing. When I started keeping track of my bird sightings a few years ago, I assumed it would be a quick addition to my Alberta list. No such luck! In a larger map. The first thirty minutes of our outing was extremely quiet with a handful of Black-billed Magpies. Flew across the...

The next one is just around the corner. Saturday, 22 December 2012. Christmas Bird Count - Calgary. Plans for a quiet Christmas around town enable me to participate in three Christmas Bird Counts.
