Outside the Rat Race. Thursday, April 09, 2015. I want the truth! This week I had the honor and privilege of serving as a juror for my local county. In some ways it was exactly like the movies and TV shows. In other ways, quite different. There was no background music unfortunately. Also, they only selected 6 people instead of 12. He did admit to drinking one beer 10 minutes before being pulled over. Or, did he fail because of prior health issues? It was up to the 6 of us to decide this man's fate. They ...

Outside the Rat Race. Wednesday, November 19, 2014. The Power of Energy. I'm flying back from a business trip right now. My intent was to read during the two hour trip, and instead I spent most it passed out in my seat. Thankfully I woke up long enough snap that photo of the clouds hovering over Oregon [and write this post]. And then I got to thinking about energy and productivity. So here come some thoughts while cruising in an airplane. Tired. 1) I'm a morning person. So my intentions are good. I j...

Outside the Rat Race. Saturday, January 10, 2015. It's amazing how the difference between success and failure can be a matter of degree. You don't have to be going 180 degrees in the opposite direction to fail. Sometimes you can only be off by a couple of degrees, mostly headed in the right direction, but it's enough that it makes a difference over time. Let's look at two examples:. 1) In Jiu Jitsu. They're both headed in the right direction: both start from a desire to improve. Both start at the sam...

Outside the Rat Race. Thursday, June 25, 2015. Moving Beyond Apple iPhone's Tap and Hold of an App Icon. I love my iPhone and generally wouldn't change anything about it. However, there is one highly under-utilized feature I would like to see re-purposed. Tap and hold an icon: It starts to jiggle and you can move it. What if tapping and holding an icon instead. Showed my current notifications and/or widgets that are in the main pull down menu. Kind of silly, but it would be cool to choose different icons...

Outside the Rat Race. Saturday, December 06, 2014. And Now For a Fur-less (Furlo? We're having a baby! We've been waiting 3 years to write this post. Thank you to everyone who prayed for us. To friends who cried with us during our 7 miscarriages. (it was a long 3 years :/). To the doctors who poked and prodded both of us and put up with our un-ending questions. To co-workers who dealt with our crazy mood swings for no apparent reason. Finally, to God for being faithful to us. Posted by James Furlo. We, J...

Outside the Rat Race. Saturday, June 28, 2014. Are Gas Prices Rising? One of the perks of being an analyst is that you tend to collect data for the fun of it. Because you never know when you might need to do a quick analysis. In this particular case, the opportunity presented itself when my mom shared a CNBC article about the inflation of food and gas costs. Food prices gas prices = Stressed consumers. The article talks about food prices rising, and then talks about gas prices. Like I said, being an anal...
