The Sweetness of Pie: May 2012

Thursday, May 17, 2012. Mint Chocolate Birthday Cake. After tasting the scraps of a mint chocolate pound cake that I made and gave away, Bill can't stop talking about it. So when planning his birthday cake. I immediately started looking for a mint chocolate recipe that would go well with frosting. Of course, Martha Stewart has a recipe. I wanted to add sea creatures around the cake, so I looked up how to make fondant. This marshmallow fondant. Didn't seem too hard. There's even a video. 1 tsp baking soda.

The Sweetness of Pie: Green Tomato Pie
http://sweetnessofpie.blogspot.com/2012/09/green-tomato-pie.html
Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Well, it has been a while. I will try not to neglect my little blog so long next time. Get sneak peeks for what's coming up by subscribing to The Sweetness of Pie. The recipe I used is a simple one. It's very much like an apple pie recipe. The cooked green tomatoes tasted to me like plums. 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour. 1 tbsp granulated sugar. 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, chilled. 1/2 cup ice water. Filling: from About.com Southern Food. Grated peel from 1 lemon. Preheat the ov...

The Sweetness of Pie: March 2012

Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Chinese Dumplings with Beef and Green Onions. I have only a few childhood memories of helping my mom cook in the kitchen. Usually she handles it all. In one of them I remember chopping Napa cabbage furiously for the dumpling filling. Then we made snakes out of the left over dumpling wrappers, which I believe were homemade. This dumpling recipe doesn't have Napa cabbage in it, but it's made the same way- homestyle. 1 lb ground beef. 2 inch fresh ginger, minced. 4 tbsp soy sauce.

The Sweetness of Pie: Chicken Soup with Herb Dumplings
http://sweetnessofpie.blogspot.com/2012/10/chicken-soup-with-herb-dumplings.html
Sunday, October 14, 2012. Chicken Soup with Herb Dumplings. I just had the best anniversary! My husband gave me a card, among other things, that ended with "With all my love, your husband." I have the best husband in the world, and I don't tell him that enough. It's hard to believe it's been four years since our wedding. We went to Vermont to take anniversary pictures to celebrate. Hopefully I can share them with you soon! Chicken Soup with Dumplings. 1/8 tsp ground black pepper. 1/8 tsp dried oregano.

The Sweetness of Pie: Strawberry Rhubarb Pie and Lessons Learned
http://sweetnessofpie.blogspot.com/2012/08/strawberry-rhubarb-pie-and-lessons.html
Sunday, August 19, 2012. Strawberry Rhubarb Pie and Lessons Learned. This is my first time making strawberry rhubarb pie! They say this is an old time-y pie, but I don't remember ever eating one. Perhaps I have once or twice, but they didn't stick in my memory. But many people have told me it's their favorite pie. Since my in-laws had rhubarb growing in their suburban garden, I figure this is a good opportunity to try baking one myself. I adapted the recipe from Epicurious. Whatever issues I had with the...

The Sweetness of Pie: January 2012
http://sweetnessofpie.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Follow my blog with Bloglovin. I guess cantaloupes are summer fruits, but I always end up getting more cantaloupes in the winter. Perhaps it's because there are less choices in the winter. Bill's not a fan of cantaloupes, but I love the fragrant, mellon-y sweetness. Back in Taiwan, I used to get smoothies made from all kinds of fruits- papaya, apple, even grapes. This cantaloupe smoothie reminds me of those drinks. It is healthy, yummy, and so pretty! 1 cup cubed cantaloupe.
