A place for OWL members to sound off. Wednesday, July 22, 2009. July 18, 2009 and SP4449. On Saturday July 18, 2008, my wife wanted to go fishing with her Mom on a pontoon boat. Knowing that SP4449 was scheduled for the weekend and that it was likey following the Amtrak speeds, I figured we had one shot to catch it. So I told her we could if I could catch the SP 4449 in the process, as the kids would like to see it. Her Mom agreed. Soon after, another train came by, again from the north. O. Fall in the S...

Overland Western Lines - Members Hoot: August 2006

A place for OWL members to sound off. Saturday, August 12, 2006. Canadian Rockies, Banff and Calgary 8/9-10/6. After Leaving Lake Louise, I headed down to Banff. Knowing that the eastbound stacker was in the pattern, I hustled east, with thoughts of getting the cliche'd but required "train at the depot" picture by the oft-shown Banff station. As I took detail pictures around the perimeter, I found that the locals kept some original character on the outside. Talking with a British foamer who was there, I ...

Overland Western Lines - Members Hoot: September 2007

A place for OWL members to sound off. Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Given its routing, and thoughts of catching it at least twice, I decided to use the restored Milwaukee Road depot at Deerfield, IL as my first photo backdrop. At about 10:50, I heard the distinctive whistle sound for the nearby crossing to the south, and the excursion appear running wrong-main. The 2816 was accompanied by a CP GP38-2 for the week, as protection should mechanical difficulties arise. After a fine display of prowess, the t...

Overland Western Lines - Members Hoot: December 2008

A place for OWL members to sound off. Friday, December 05, 2008. Fall in the South. The weekend of October 18 and 19, 2008 afforded me the chance to get back to the Atlanta area for a meeting. I took advantage of the weekend over to meet up with one of our OWL members and do some railfanning. We spent Friday in the Atlanta area. Unfortunately, it was nearly constant rain . An empty BNSF coal train works through Inman on its way back west. A westbound mixed freight heads through Inman on the main. Trying ...

Overland Western Lines - Members Hoot: November 2006

A place for OWL members to sound off. Wednesday, November 15, 2006. Trainfest 2006 - "We was big". Well, another Trainfest has come and gone. This year, the OWL layout was HUGE. I think we were on the verge of being able to setup a half court of basketball inside. Considering the size that this group has become, the extra room inside proved to be greatly appreciated by all in the group who participated. Tim and his long, WEPX unit coal train. Overland Western Lines - Members Hoot: June 2007
http://membersnews.n9pby.com/2007_06_01_archive.html
A place for OWL members to sound off. Friday, June 29, 2007. I was called for train 330-990 on May 29th at 1430. This train had been on the lineup for about 12 hours earlier the night before, but it is not unusual for trains to be staged at Portage, so I didn't think anything of it. The train had hit a truckload of appliances in Mauston at about 0600 that morning. Apparently there were no serious injuries, at least not that I'm aware of. Posted by cprengineer @ 9:43 PM. A place for OWL members to sound off. Friday, May 25, 2007. Weekend Excursion to Twin Towns (part 4). To go back to part three of this series, here. To go to the beginning.). Sunday morning began with a visit to Minnesota Commercial's facilities to pay homage to some of the remaining ex-GBW Alcos. At CP's Humboldt Yard, we found a few sets of road power laying over. Overland Western Lines - Members Hoot: March 2008

A place for OWL members to sound off. Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Just Like the Good Old Days . . . . Almost. On Tuesday (March 25th, 2008) I swung by the Wisconsin Rapids CN yard on my way home. I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of ex-WC locomotives sitting out, still in Maroon and Gold. It looked like the same scene I'd seen a hundred times in the past. From a distance, everything looked OK. Closer inspection revealed a 3014 in need of a face lift and a matching numberboard. Links to this post.
