starting slow | John Jay Balancing Act

John Jay Balancing Act. The biggest issue for beginner schedulers, at least it seems to me, is committment. They start a day planner, but forget to write in it. They try to utilize a calendar, but never refer to it. They sketch a schedule, but end up procrastinating. They want to get organized, but they have trouble sticking with it. So where do you start? Write a list of all the things you need to get done in the week. This should come naturally, once you get the hang of list-making. Look over your sche...

John Jay Balancing Act. Archive for January, 2012. Stress management technique #4: let it go. All this being said, I am not one to forgive and forget so to speak. With every thing deserving of being let go there is a lesson to be learned. Did I fail to do everything on my to-do list today, because I spent too much time on a single project? Or, was it because I was unfocused and unorganized? How can I prepare better for the next busy day? Click here for your two minutes of procrastination. Defense mechani...

John Jay Balancing Act. Archive for April, 2012. My point tonight is not so much that this kind of procrastination is bad. It is; don’t get me wrong. The bigger point here is that we sometimes don’t realize our own motives. We think that we are doing something for one reason, when really another is driving us. This week think really critically about why you schedule things a certain way. Are you self-sabotaging? Avoiding work in innovative ways? Click here for your two minutes of procrastination. Perhaps...

John Jay Balancing Act. Author Archive for MaryBeth Apriceno. Thank you for reading. With less than two weeks before I embark on my summer journey halfway around the world to Sri Lanka , I’ve been giving this blog some serious thought. I’ve asked all the logistic questions that come to the mind of Type A individuals – like how will I post when I will only have intermittent internet access? And, how will I charge my laptop without a plug adapter? Better yet, what if I was? And if not, then on what topics ...

I’ve asked all the logistic questions that come to the mind of Type A individuals – like how will I post when I will only have intermittent internet access? John Jay Balancing Act. Archive for February, 2012. A busy schedule makes one prone to a lot of things – stress, sleep deprivation, a suffering social life. A busy schedule can also lead to what I call. When one project takes up too much time and cascades into the time allotted for another project. The worst thing about overflow is that it often leads only to more overflow, sometimes rendering entire days of packed schedules unproductive. Money vs. stress. I get it – we all have to pay the bills...

John Jay Balancing Act. Archive for March, 2012. Two minutes before I sat down to write this post I made myself a cup of coffee. It was 7:04 PM. Now it is 7:06 PM, and I am sipping that coffee. Chances are I will not be able to sleep when I finally crawl into bed tonight. Better that than falling asleep on my commute home though, right? Think about it. How many cups of coffee/tea/iced tea/hot chocolate/soda do you drink a day? What about how it makes your heart race? What about how it makes you anxious?

John Jay Balancing Act. That opening paragraph might sound like a complaint, but I assure you it’s not. To be honest, I don’t think I have ever been so happy to be busy. While having too much on my to-do list can stress me out, this “To-do before I leave for Sri Lanka list” is an entirely different animal. The longer it gets, the wider I smile. This post tonight isn’t about my trip to Sri Lanka (those are to come! Click here for your two minutes of procrastination animation. Feed for this Entry. You are ...
